The Dominion of s©w Zealand Bowling Association brought its 1918 tournament to a successful conclusion on the 23rd, when the final games in tho Champion Singles Competition were played on the Caledonian Green. Tho weather conditions were perfect, the green was in splendid order, being very true and keen, and the standard of play during the day was of a remarkably high order, while the, interest of the larjre crowd' of spectators which gathered on the green was maintained right up to the last moment. As was anticipated, three games were neoessary to complete the competition, the players being J. M'Curdy (St. Kilda), Maxwell Walker (Ponsonby), and W. Foster (Caledonian). In the first game of the day Fostorf defeated M'Curdy, but when •he met Walker he suffered his first defeat in the competition. In the • play-off between the two lastnamed competitors Foster managed to wrest the final .victory from the Auckland man and became singles champion for 1918. The win of Foster in this event means that the whole of the three competitions—Rinks, Doubles, and Singles—have been won by Dunedin players, a result that must be very gratifying to the bowlers of this city. Following are the results: — SINGLES COMPETITION. SEMI-FINALS. W. Foster (Caledonian) 21 beat J. M'Curdy (St. Kilda) 14. M. Walker. (Ponsonby) 19 beat W. Foster (Caledonian) 10. FINAL W. Foster (Caledonian) 16 beat M. Walker (Ponsonby) 11. At the close of play the president of the association (Mr C. R. Smith) presented the framed certificates, which this year took the place of prizes, to the successful competitors. These were confined solely to the winners of the' various competitions. SOCIAL GATHERING. At the invitation of Mr T. Maitland (president of the Dunedin Bowling Club) a large number of visiting bowlers, tournament players, and representatives of other clubs assembled in the Dunedin Club's pavilion on the 22nd, where a most enjoyable social gathering was held.
