SALVATION ARMY WAR WORK

APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE. The New Zealand branch of the Salvation Army is making its first great national appeal to the public of the dominion for help in their splendid work in the interests of our soldiers in the firing line, in hospitals, in camps in England, France, and New Zealand, in , their Ambulance Corps work, and in countless other ways. During the past two years and a-half the international head office of the Salvation Army has spent over a quarter of a million in carrying on this great work. A campaign has now been opened in Dnnodin to raise Dunedin's proportion of the £50,000 required from the dominion, and it is confidently expected that the district will rise to the occasion in its usual generous manner, as soldiers all speak in the highest praise of the excellent work done by the Salvation Army for' their comfort. The amount being aimed at should, therefore, be easily provided by the people of New Zealand. Although the campaign has just commenced, the committee has received most encouraging results so far. A meeting of the committee in connection with the above appeal was held in Mr -E. S. Wilson's board room on Friday morning, when thero were present-—Mr G. Fenwick (in tho chak), the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark), Lieutenant-colonel iStonoham, Messrs G. L. Denniston. F. W. Mitchell, G. Crow, R. G. Sise, and Adjutant Hosking. The secretary reported that the mayors of several of the country districts round Dunedin had been w.ritten to. asking if they could form committees in their district to raise funds in connection with this appeal. Arrangements were made for canvassing the business portion of the town for subscriptions, and arrangements are also being made to canvass the suburban areas. It was resolved to have a street day. which will be a flag day, on February 8, the arrangements for which were left to Messrs W. L. Logio, F. G. dimming, J. C. M'Ceorge, and Staff Captain Macaulay, with power to add to their number.

Adjutant Hosking explained that this appeal was being made throughout the' dominion, and the matter was being taken up enthusiastically in the northern towns. The Army want 'to raise £50,000 throughout the dominion. Feilding has raised £2OOO, and Oamaru £IO6O, and substantial amounts are expected from the larger centres, so that it is anticipated that the £50.000 aimed at will be easily realised. A largo number of donations have alrea"dy_ been received, amongst others being £nc following: Otaco Patriotic Association £SOO Union Steam Ship Company 500 Sargood. Son. and Ewen 250 Wright, Stephenson. And Co 100 Mackerras and Hazlett 100 Anonymous 100 J. Rattray and Son (Ltd.) 100
