Black.
White. Black to play, White to win. This is a correction of No. 979 in "Gould's Problem Book," where a draw is made.
GAMES. An interesting match was played recently in Sydlney between Messrs E. W. Smith and V. liickard (both of whom figured in the “Australasian” championship at Melbourne in 1915) for £lO. For the following two games of the match we are indebted to the Melbourne Times:
(I'loxes oy w liter. ; (a) 9 14, 22 18, 5 9 draws comfortably. (b) 11 15 is preferable, followed by 17 13, 9 14, 29 25, 16, 30 26, 6 10, 82 28, 26, 23 19, 15 24, 28 19, 14 17, 21 14, 10 17, 25 21, 6 10, 21 14, 10 17, 26 22, 17 26, 31 22, 3 8 (7 10 loses by 22 17), 22 17, 7 11, 19 16, 11 15, 16 12, 8 11, 12 8, 16 19, draw. —J. (a) 6 13 may be played at this stage, but beware of 29 25 in reply; it leads to trouble for Whit© by 10 14, etc. The -correct play is 19 15. (b) An orthodox “Paisley” or “Bristol Cross” game. A sharp skirmish between Millard F. Hopper, a young New York City player, and Sam Levine, known as “the boy wonder,” who resides in Boston. Young Hopper never loses an opportunity to meet the best of them when occasion permits. For score and notes w© are indebted by Mr L. M. Stearns.
(a) Although the gams started an “Ayrshire Lassie," it has now run. into familiar lines of the “Old Fourteenth.” (b) This move is questionable; 8 11, 31 26, then 59, ■would'' bo all right. The fact that White is.not compelled to play 31 26 renders the 5 9 move weak at this stage. (c) White is taking fuL advantage of the situation. (d) Some class to this move, although Levine probably thought for a moment or two that the clever New Yorker had made a “slip.” The next few moves, however, speedily undeceived him. NOTES AND CRITICISMS. Mr A. Shepherd, Waimato, gives the following play to win for Black in the ending recently published as between Messrs O’Malley and Diack:—Position; Black on 5, 12, kings 15, 26. White on 14, 20. 28,
