CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By Fhitz.

The trainers -who did the holiday campaign on the West Coast are all home again with their teams. So far as .the gallopers were concerned the trip turned Out very successful, a big share of the prize money being oaptured' at Reefton, Greymouth, and Hokitika. T. JL Gillett bad a particularly good time-with Merton, Gallupin, Rosevear, and Achillades, who won quite a long string of events at the threo meetings. H. Ellis, also did well with Jeaainot, while J, B. Pearson had a, very successful time with Red Book. All the horses are now enjoying an easy spoil, which they have earned after their recent exertions; but they will be in action again shortly with a view to other engagements. Canterbury stableß will be strongly repreaentedi at the Wellington meeting, \vhioh opens' on Saturday. A. Cutts will have a couple to send north to add to th/? team already at Trentham, while R. J. Mason, F. D. Jones, P. M'Grath, and R. W. King will also have" horses at the fixture. In addition, R. D. O'Donnell is going north with several of the Yaldhurst contingent, so it will be bad luck if some of the prize money does not come south. The Chokebore Lodge two-year-olds Lionakin, Counterscarp, and Heathercote were exercised at the barrier one morning last week. Heathercote, who shapes like being a useful colt, was well behaved, but the other two were fractious. After going some distanco in a sprint from the barrier Counterscarp whipped round a<id galloped back. Sne jumped the rail and fell, without injuring herself, but hw rider, N. shoro, got a severs shakiuT, |donskin also had a fall _ last week, and, though a snur| galloper, it looks as if she Would be a aimoult filly to handle through her racing career.

Brambletyo has not done rtmoh seyer* work lately, but she does well on a light preparation, and she looks in fine trim. Lovesick has been galloping In fine style, and the stater to None*, has e«ly to repeat her track form fa win a good race shortly. Matty oprjo&ra *io have got orer the fcronbio wbloh nrsrw.ted her from racing! during the hoUaey*, P-nd she is hitting out well m her work. Mason • twCHyear-olds TClerjjf and Indus ore in good fottlo, ana It may not bo le*i before both of them get among the winners. The former is a particularly lawful-] poking wwmgßter. Disdamiuf ]s beck in work Mjftin, and she movent along nicely in_ ner first sprini one mommg last week. In is fast but unlucky mare is equal to a good perform* ance up to a mile, when G. MurrayAynsley g?ta her ready to rue*. WordoiKMir fa movjhff along in good style, and he stvtfTilc kavs something fo fcay hi the <J*c<J»ion more than one raee during the autumn. The pyo&>w.i .Intention is to send him to Wlngatm nox?, m<inth. and he may he accompanied bv Aooroiul, a promising brother to Dlsd&taful. Tho oar-ola Bondage looks none the ■worse for nor recent roohig, and I have great hopes that she will turn out a good one.

R. Derrett is giving Mn.rgsri.ne plepty of solid ryork, alid she never looked better ♦ban she does at proseni It is probable •he will he seen taping over a mile and &.- half before tho close of the season. Kimbolton has pone Into P. M'Gvath's fftabl©.- .Whilo under R. Emerson's care he

rawed unlucjdlyj. hut ho ia in good fettle, ' so bo may land a stake shortly. Biplane hae been treated to 'some eprir.ll> ■ ing !at»iy, and shaped well. So far no more information ia available »/. to Mason's intentions witjii the Comedy colt, though the popular belief is that he will go to Australia for the Easter meeting at liandwiok, Battle Eve is having an fiasy time, necessitated through a mishap while racing at Oamaru. Charley and Bandy, who have boon on the easv list for some time, will be taken in hand again by F. D. Jones on his. return from Trentham. The samo trainer is handling a useful-looking three-year-old by Antagonist from Bountiful. It is. probable that a big contingent of i Canterbury horses will visit Dunediii at the end of ..this month to assist at the Forbury | Park Trotting Club's meeting. ! The three-year-old pacer President Wilson has returned from Auckland, and arrangements have been made for W. Kerr to train him for tho remainder of his engagements this season. i Don Oajsar has resumed work after a long spell; but it is doubtful if this onoe. speedy pacer will ever come back to his best form. I Nominations for tho Metropolitan Trotting Club's Champion Stakes closed las't ! week, and; though only 14 three-year-olds are engaged, they should suffice for a great oontest, as they include several smart performers, in addition to others who have big reputations. The club would bo well ad- , vised, however, to take earlier nominations 1 for future classio events in order to secure I the patronage of a laijger section of owners.
