AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By TatSoa

The Cup meeting at Ellerslie concluded on Now Year's Day, and even the most sanguine could hardly have expected the success the carnival proved. The racing ■was good, the weather fine (except for the latter portion of the concluding day), ■while the totalisator turnover easily established a record for the Dominion. On Cup Day alone just on £BI.OOO was invested on the machine. But perhaps the most pleasing feature was the fact that the majority of winners were no ! n difficult to find", and, with one exception, when Fiery. Cross won the Cup,' there was not a double-figure dividend during the three days. It is a long time since backers had such a good run. To deal with each race separately would tak-i up considerable space, but the principal events call for more than mere passing notice. Having dealt, with Cup Day in my previous letter, I shall begin with the racing on the middle day, when the principal items on the card were the Royal Stakes and Summer Cup. It was in the. Royal Stakes 'that the test came as to whether Hymestra had retained the brilliancy he possessed as a two-year-old. and right well did he reply, as he defeated the best of the two-vear-olds of the season in racehorse fashion. Hymestra beat Demagogue, BoPeep, Finmark. Pontoon, and other good two-vear-olds from a yard upwards, and 'to demonstrate his class as a sprinter he came out again on the third day and, with 9.6 in the saddle, won the Newmarket Handicap'in the fast time of lmin 13 l-ssec. Behind Hymestra wjgi-o such speedy sprinters as Kintr Lupin, Gazique, Mill o' Gowrie, and Wrestler. It seems only a question of Hymestra keeping right to win more races. The Derby was a poor race, and, as expected, Estland was so superior to the other three-year-olds that he had matters all his own way over the last quarter. It was the. slowest-run race at the meeting, and some idea of the pace set can be gauged by the fact that the first mile occupied lmin 48see. Lord fKenilworth was second, but the slow pace _ set may have helped him to train that position, and maybe it is as well not to get carried away by his run. When he steps out in a Frist-run handicap it may be found that a mile will be plenty far enough for him. Vagabond and Silver Tongue were big disappointments, and their showings were a long way below what was expected of thcm.° There is nothing to be said for Gamecock, as the chestnut did not show enough pace in his races to win a maiden hack race. Perhaps he is not genuine, aa prior to the meeting he showed a lot of pace in training. ' The evergreen and brilliant Kins Lupin, the best handicap horse owned and trained in Auckland for years, was responsible for a couple of brilliant performances. On the first day, with 8.12, he just got up in time to make a dead heat of it with Hymestra in- the Railway Handicap, and this he followed up by carrying 8.12 and

winning the Summer Cup from end to end. beating a good one in Polydamon, besides other horses of class. King Lupin is a brilliant horse without doubt, and one his owner, Mr R. Harmon, would not part with at any price. A good sort, of two-year-old in Long Range came very much into the limelight, and in his three starts he won twice and was second on the third occasion, when but for a poor start he would most likely have won. Unfortunately Long Range was not in cither the Foai Stakes or Royal Slakes; but he ie such a great finisher that I fully expect hint to hold his own with Demagogue; Finmark, 80-Pcep, and Pontoon when ho meets them. In Long Range Sir George Clifford has the makings of a Derbv colt.

The Auckland crack juvenile Informal was produced only once, this being in the Foal Stakes, when he. ran badly. However, all is not well with the son of Demosthenes, and his party were quite prepared to see the gelding fail. The Cup meeting brought to light a promising stayer in the Irish-bred Cynic, who was unlucky in the Cup, in that he got into a bad position very early, and was a long way back at the home turn. Over the last two furlongs Cynic was easily doing better than anything else in the race, iind there is no doubt that had he got a better run in the early part he would certainly have secured a place. I would not go so far as to say Cynic would'have won, but he would have given a lot of trouble. The same thing happened the last day in tho Racing Club Handicap, when Cynic came from a long way back and ran second. Cynic's trouble is that he takes time to get on his feet, and the result is that he gets himself into trouble in the early part. Mr W. Kemball, the sportsman, who in tho last couple of months purchased Snub, Nanna, and Hymestra must be well pleased with th<? successes of two of the trio. Since giving 2050 gs for Hymestra. the colt has started four times, winning three races outright and dead-heating in the other. Nanna has carried Mr Kemball's colours seven times, winning four times, being second once, and third twice. Snub, on the other hand, finished third in the New Zealand Cup, but since then has been a rank failure On the track Snub can do anything, but in a raco he seems to be a horse of another colour. One thing is clear, and that is, he does not always do his best in his races.

Colonel Soult did not succeed in winning a race, his best effort being second to Polydamon hi the Christinas Handicap. He did not have the best of luck, as in two races he was last to leave the mark. As he was weighted at 7.9, but did not start in the Racing Club Handicap, he should be hard to dispose of in the Takapuna Cup. One feature of the racing was the number of horses reported to have lost plates during the racing. Multiply is said to have lost two in the Cup, when he ran third, and Desert Gold lost three in the Racing Club Handicap, when she ran third. For more than one reason I have left any reference to Desert Gold till the end. The fact that'for the first time since she was a two-year-old she took on a handicap event and was beaten is, of course, now well known. It cannot bo said that opinions have always been unanimous regarding the capabilities of Mr Lowry's mare, and while some placed her as a champion of champions,, others, again, argued that she. had never been really asked a solid test.. except over very short distances, where speed, and not weight, played the all-important part. I must admit that I was amongst those who were not satisfied she was a champion of champions. Certainly she had beaten the best at weight-for-ago over various distances; but I cannot forget that at Riecarton she had to bo hunted out to beat Nones, and at Ellerslie she was doing her best to beat Eligible and Snub in the Derby. The fact that she kept on winning led many to conclude that she was always winning easily; but there were those who said the first time she met a real good horse over a distance of ground she would be beaten. And so it proved when Kilboy beat her over two miles at Trcntham. Desert Gold has got a lot of stake money very easily, and there have been times she captured a good stake with perhaps only a maiden to oppose her, as was tibe case when her only opponent at Riecarton was Northam, and again at Ellerslie, when she was opposed by Sea D'eil. But that, is fretting a.way from her performnoe at Ellerslie on New Year's Day, when she was sent out to contest the Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a=half. Prior to the race rain began to fall, so that, with 10.4 to carry, the daughter of All Black would have to be little short of the champion claimed for her to win. But she' failed after being out in front for 11 of the 12 furlongs of the journey. At the home turn she looked a good winner; but Multiply was never far away, and when challenges came out from the field it was Sfoon all up with her. and she just managed to struggle into... third place by the narrowest margin. Whether the rain which fell made a difference or not cannot be said, but it would certainly not be in her favour. After the race it was given out that the mare last three of her plates during the raco. and also that. owin<? to the rain, her rider. O'Shea, weighed in at 10.6. This sort of talk is onlv rubbish, because if O'lShea weighed in 21b over the other riders would do the same. O'Shea did not_ get all the rain that fell. My eandid_ opinion is that the mare was beaten fairly and squarely, and under any weather conditions defeat would come her way if she met the same horses at the same weights. I have never claimed that Desert Gold is the-best animal ever seen out on a course, in New Zealand, and I am sure that horses like Advance. Aohilledes, or Wairiki would have done as well as. if not better than. Desert Gold did in the Racing Club Handicap on New Year's Day. Since the Cup meeting matters have become very quiet at Ellerslie; but. with the Takapuna meeting on the horizon, it will not bo long ,bcfore things liven up again, and in a week or so we will be as busy as ever.
