PORT MOLYNEUX SPORTS.

In the minds of many some doubt exists as to whether the Port Molynoux sports gathering held on New Year's Day constitutes the society's fiftieth anniversary. The first recorded sports meeting at'Port Molyneux was held in 1864, this being the year which will be remembered by reason of a gold rush on a small scale which set in to the beach near the point. The first sports gathering was held in front of the old Alexandra Hotel. £3O being given in prize money. Tho 9ports ended up with a grand ball held in the hotel in the evening. Though sports gatherings were held between _ 1864 and 1905, no record of thcee gatherings have boon kept, The meetings, however, which took place during this period were financed by subscriptions from the settlers in the surrounding districts. In 1904 Mr Andrew "Wylio was the treasurer, and. it was owing to this gentleman that from 1905, when he was appointed secretary, that official and authentic records were kept. In 1906 the society wae affiliated to the N.Z.A. and C.U. Association. The society's annual gatherings have been held on the present site a't Kororo Creek for about 40 yeare, which was in the early days occupied as a whaling station. ,
