AUCKLAND TOPICS.

During tho past week the weather in Auckland has been quite in keeping with that experienced for months past, and if sunshine was a solid and could be gathered, it would, during the past year at any rate, be much sought after by collectors of rare productions. Day after day. week after week, it is rain and little else but rain, and it goes without saying that such a state of conditions does not tend to make matters on the training track at all lively or interesting. It has always been contended that Xew Z-ealandcrs who go "a-rac-ing " in Australia are given a lot of undue attention _by those whose duty it is to supervise racing, and recent incidents of questions asked of, and disqualifications beiiv meted out to, visitors from New Zealand would pardon anyone from thinking that unduo suspicion is centred upon owners, trainers, and jockeys from the Dominion. Either that, or we must conclude that the sporting fraternity from New Zealand has a different code to that prevailing in Australia. Tho successful Ellerslie trainer has had his team added to by the addition of Silver Pine. This gelding raced last season without scoring a win. and is related to that useful sort. Kauri King. Several well known Auckland horsemen will shortly be in khaki. These include J. Conquest. H. Goldfinch, " Len " Morris, and P. Tapn.

(Scottish Knight is being hustled along whenever fine weather gives the opportunity, and the son of Mnrblo Arch —Winsome will most likely turn out the best three-yoav-old in Auckland. He raced only twice las!' season, when lie ran second in the Avondale Stakes*, and on the second day lie won the Nursery. After that be went wroiiT. and was taken up again only a few months ago.

W. Sharpe has Fionnuah looking really well. She shows lots of pace on the track, but does "not appear to relish racing for "keens." on she should make a trood hurdler. Sharpo has also a relative to Tnraru Jack, who has the appearance of being at lenst useful. Sylviaroa. who has heen al: Ellerslie for s»omo time, is beginning to show pace. When he was first brought here he was schooled over Hie smnll hurdles a pood deal so evidently the intention is to fry and pick up a jumping race with him.

Pierrot, who brought off a small surprise at the Northern meeting, is doing useful work, and gives indications of turning out a stayer. Marconi is back in C. Coleman's team after an unsuccessful trip south. Marconi is always an unreliable sort —good when in the right humour, but generally at loggerheads with himself. Master Kegel will be ready to race at any time. Though ho has not been asked to' race, lie has done steady toil almost the whole of the; winter. Penniless and Ulster are a pair of jumpers being got ready for Avondale by P. Jones. Penniless will contest the hurdle races and Ulster the cross-country events. The useful little Lightning is doing nicely. and the little mare should again pay her way this season in events whero the com pany is not too select. The three-year-old Empire is still inclined to bo madhcaded, and he promises to bo a nuisance to the starter in any event he contests. Analogue is very well; but this is because ho was tuned up to go to Australia, and the trip was afterwards abandoned. The well-known l'idor W. (" Skipper") Ryan has been on the invalid list for some time; but ho is making satisfactory progress, and should be amongst the regulars shortly. Keystone, Sylvan Knight, and Brown Loch are three maiden hurdlers in work under the supervision of P. Jones. The appointment of Mr F. J. Macmanemin to tne position of handicapper to the Auckland Racing Club is one that will give general satisfaction, as a more practical man to fill the position it. would be difficult to find. There were 19 applicants for the position, and these wore reduced to three at the first consideration by the committee, and on Thursday a final selection was made in favour of Mr Macmanemin. The successful, gentleman has for many years been recognised as one of Nor/ Zealand's leading trainers, and the number of winners turned out by him would make a formidable list. St. Clements, Nonc-tre, Haydn are champions of times gone by who received their polish at his hands. At the present time Mr Macmanemin's team of horses numbers somewhere about 30 ; but now, of course, other quarters will havo to be found for them, and no doubt the horses will be scattered amongst other trainers at Ellerslie. Our new handicapper will try his hand officially on the nomina tions for the A.R.C. November meetings and his adjustments will be looked forward to. H. Goldfinch has had his license renewed by the A.R.C. Committee; but the successful horseman is required to go into camp this month. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. DANNEYIRKE RACES. The Dannevirke spring meeting was held in showery weather, and the track was slow.
