THE HOSPITAL SHIPS.

(From Otra Own Correspondent,) WELLINGTON, September 4. A return presented to Parliament shows the accrued expenditure on the hospital shins to March 31, 1917. The expenditure on the Maheno (four voyages) was: —Fitting and provisioning in New Zealand, £84,991; hire, £67,318; maintenace (including coal, -water, canal dues, stores purchased abroad, and general expenses), £37,973; pay of staff, £22,925; pay of crew, £29,757;—t0ta1, £242,964. The following are the figures for the Marama (three voyages):—Fitting and provisioning in New Zealand, £88,494; hire, £76,361; maintenance, £30,711; pay of staff, £25,625; pay of crew, £23,722;—t0ta1, £242,273. The equipment and stores supplied ex stock defence stores to July 31 were:— Maheno; £687; Marama, £372. The expenditure in money from private sources to February 1 on the Maheno was £19,398, and on the Marama £20,932, a balance of £8892 being still in hand. This money has been expended on medical equipment. The quantities and cost of wines, spirits, and malt liquors placed on board and under the control of the senior medical officer for medical purposes are:—Maheno : First voyage, £628; second voyage, £112; third and fourth voyages, nil; fifth voyage, £140; total, £BBI. Marama: First voyage, £792; second voyage, £81; third voyage, £63; total, £937.
