AUCKLAND TOPICS

By TathOA. The Marton mooting this week, at which several Auckland horses wore competing, was a disastrous one to local backers. However, the horses sent down from hero were a poor lot, and it was not expected that they would do much good. All the supposed good things got beaten. During the past week rain has fallen almost continuously in Auckland, and consequently there has been little or nothing doing on the training tracks. Present indications are that Auckland will be stronger this season in two-year-olds than for many seasons past. They are, taking them all round, a good-looking lot; but no line as to their paces can be got, as the wet weather has prevented trainers from trying the youngsters out in earnest. The only Auckland trainer to got -any prize money at the Marton meeting was J. Lambess, whose representative. Sleepy Jack, ran a dead heat in the final event. Sleepy Jack is not thoroughly wound up yet, and the racing ho had should sharpen him up. The old chaser, Golden Glow, was taken down to Marton to contest the steeplechase; but the chestnut is. I fancy, a light of other days, and it will have to be a very weak field for him to win a race. E. Pope's pair. Gold Fran and Backfire, were unsuccessful at Marton. but they would bo taken on to the Pannovirke meeting. Their prospects of winning are not rosy. Analogue, who was tuned up some weeks ago as it \vas intended to take him to Australia, is now only doing light work. Ho will not bo seen out til! the Avondale meeting. The leading horseman, .T. O'Shoa. was drawn in the" last ballot. Mr J. Cleeson, part owner of Colonel Sonlt. also had his number drawn. The work of forming the new course at Takapuna is practically it a standstill owing to the wet weather, and there is no chance of the track being ready to race upon for some time to come.

J. King, who has been at Ellcrslie for some time with the Alison team of horses, returned to Takapuna this week. The team, which includes Housewife, Thrace, Rockfield, Lord Kenilworth, and Agnestes, will now be trained on the beach. Bluestono is now out of work and tho chances are that he will not bo raced again till tho winter, when he will make his annual appearance. Hopfield is hitting out as well as any horse in training at Ellcrslie, and there is good reason to expect him to make amends for past failures at a very early date. Fisher, who went wrong on the eve of his departure for the National meeting at Ricoarton, is again in steady -work. The somewhat disappointing Torotoro, now trained by J. Chishohn, is ono of those regularly stretched out; but ho is affected in the wind and makes a noise when galloping. Applications for the position of handicapper to the Auckland Racing Club closed this week-end, and the selection of tho person best fitted to holdi tho position is being awaited with interest.

According to private information received Tenacious fell recently whilst contesting a hurdle race in Australia, and his rider, A. Rao, was pretty badly knocked about. So far two thirds are the best achievements of Waimai since being taken to Australia.

Bingham and Demotic, a pair of three-year-olds in F. Maomanomin's stable, are doing well, particularly Bingham, who will be quite ready when tho Avondalo and Great Northern Guineas come up for dec'sion in November. F. Stenning has a very big team to begin the season with, and as most of the horses are well forward he should do his clients more than one good turn before the season is very far advanced. Amongst those doing useful work are Lady Jack, Mullingar, Jack Dolaval, Scottish Knight, and Lady Paida. The last-named goes very fast on the track, but does not reproduce her form with tho colours up. J. Lambess did not take Kauri King to Marton. The bay gelding is not quite forward enough as he has been having an easy time of it since the Wellington winter moet'ng. Whilo E. J. Rae is away in Australia with Waimui, Tenacious, and Luperino. his team at Ellcrslie are doing steady work only. More than ono trainer', who intended taking a horse or two to Australia, have been compelled to abandon the idea owing to the present disorganised state of shipping. RAGING 1M NEW ZEALAND.
