WELLINGTON NOTES.

(Feoii Our Own Correspondent.) September 6

The Marton Jockey Club's bpring meeting passed off successfully yesterday; a few showers fell, but not enough to interfere with tho outing. The course was very heavy. Big fields competed in some of the events. Speculation on the machine was heavy and showed an increase compared with last year. Three of the light weighted division filled the places in the Hack Hurdles. Tho heavy going suited Mattock (Martcllo — Itepo mare) who is locally owned and trained. He scored in good style from Colorado and Swinton who was a firm favourite. Postillion was among the runners but was first beaten. Miss Sation sustained some injuries through gettmg one of her feet through a fallen hurdle and will have to be ispelled. MattocK scored three times in the hunter class last season. Tho Trial Plate brought out a lot of likely three-year-olds. F. Tilley started two of his Australian youngsters, Rude (Cyrus—Cheeky) and Coolpan (Cooltrim— Pastry), and they ran first and third. Signorella (Signor —Crucinella) divided the Fodell pair at the posts. Piano (Hymettus— Paean) was a good favourite but failed to show up. Matilda (Rokeby—Crimson Rose) finished just behind tho placed division. Merry Jack and Sabrenui would probably have finished first and second in the Hack Steeplechase, but for running off half a mile from home. Fashion Plato, who was making her reappearance, and Paki-iti also parted company with thenriders. Union Jack failed to see it out and the Trentham-trained Coalition defeated Bodcnham at the finish. This was Coalition's first success. He failed at Trontham and Riccarton, and those tfcat stuck to him got a double figure dividend. Crawford tried to win the Marton Handicap from end to end, but failed to quito see the ten furlongs out. The grey gelding Iceberg (winner of the Jumpers Flat at Trentham), put in a good finishing run and secured the verdict from Lf.dy Louisa, who is a good performer hi badgoing. Orleans, who was favourite, failed as also did another well backed runner in Detroit.

iSandy Paul led for over two miles in the Rangitikei Steeeplechasc. He then jumped wildly, got into a couple of fences and quickly went back. Collector was well placed behind the leader till half a mile from home, where Kurapai took his measure. The top vtight, Master Strowan, well ridden, only appeared on the scene at the last fence, lie had too much pace for Kurapai in the run home and won with something in hand. This made Master Strowan's fourth sueces sive win. He has won 1950sovs in stakes at three meetings. The Linaoi-e colt Acre (from Fordell), was a good favourite for the Electric Hack Handicap, and led for about five furlongs. One of the least fancied runners in Vladieau (Vladimir— Noyeau) scored from Impediment and Silver Tongue. The two latter are by Demosthenes and will win before the season hais much further advanced. Polynesian and Rohu also ran well enough to suggest they will pay their way this season. Centre (one of the Karamu team) was favourite for the Railway Handicap and was only beaten, after a good finish with Elocution (by Demosthenes), who carries the samo colours as Silver Tongue. Lady Louisa was saddled up again in the race in which her stable mate (Sweet Tipperary) also competed. Elocution is engaged in the principal event at Danncvirke. In the concluding event a slashing finish took place between the placed horses. The judge declared a dead heat between Golden March (who finished out of a place in the Trial Plate earlier in the day) and Sleepy Jack (one of J. Lamfocss's Ellerslic team). The Karamu representative Woodlark filled the other place. Golden March was last season competing in hurdle races.
