MOMONA.

September 3. —Beautifully fine weather prevailed during the last week, and the ground dried with astonishing rapidity. Ploughed paddocks, which at the beginning of the week were in many instances of the consistency of porridge, were in the course of a few days quite firm, and capable of carrying a team. Farm work progressed somewhat, and in a _Cco:l many fields the grain drills were at work. Farmers were beginning to hope that, after all, the grain crops would be got into the ground in time to permit of a reasonable prospe:t of success, when suddenly a'l their plans were upset and their hopes rudely dispelled. Very heavy rain set in late on Saturday aflernoon, and continued throughout the night and all day on Sunday. As I write the low-lying paddocks are again submerged, and as the rain is coming from what Scotch people call " a bad airt," is imminent danger of another flood being experienced. There is no adequate protection against floods in the river embankment at Otokia. Only a low, temporary bank has bsen constructed aronnd the large breach there, and this is not capable of resisting any pressure of water. If the river rises much above normal it must break through at this breach, and a repetition of the conditions at the end of last May will be experienced. In any case the local water has made the ground so wet again that it will be a long time before we can do anything with it. Scholastic. —The school iff at present closed fcr the term holidays. On Leave.—Private Alec Bruce has been transferred to a machin 1 gun section, and is ut present home on final leave. He is to be entertained at a farewell social in the Momona Hall this week, probably on Thursday night. Persons I.—Mr A. P. Fleming, of Otokia, has boen nominated and is offering his services as a director in the T. and P. Milk Stpply Co. Mr Fleming possesses all the necessary qualifications for the position, as for many years he has taken a keen and intelligent interest in the affairs of the company.
