WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held on Friday, and was attended by Crs A. Kilpatrick (chairman), R. Marshall, C. M'Lachlin, E. Laley, J. M'Gill, and A. S. Orboll. Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson wrote forwarding a cheque for £ls to cover their share of the cost of the works in Church street. —Received.

A letter was received from the District Engineer of Railways pointing out that there was a railway ievol crossing at the south end of Warrington station yard, the view of which was much restricted by a number of fir trees growing on private property.—lnspector to report to next meeting- . , . Mr M. Quill drew attention to tho impassable condition of a portion of the road between the school teacher's residence "».nd the Soldiers' Convalescent Home at Kari-. tane. —Inspector authorised to attend to the work.

Messrs D. and J. P'ullar (Beaconsfield) asked for repairs to the road leading to their property. —The inspector reported chat gorse growing on tho roadline was the worst feature. —Work to be attended to, and notice to be given to owners to clear gorse from tho roadline.

Mr Wm. Hitchcock asked for improvements to the corner crossing from his property to the railway station, known as "Miller's" corner. —To be informed that work had been arranged for. A ratepayer wrote objecting to Mr Solomon fencing off a road at Lower Harbour. —lnspector to report. Eight applications were received for tho position of surfaceman for Merton Riding. — The applications were reduced to two and tho final appointment was left in the hands of Crs M'Gill and Marshall and the inspector.

The Inspector (Mr Thcs. Lang) reported as follows: —Merton Riding: Metal has been spread on the Warrington-Seacliff road, and on the roads in Warrington township, and the metal had been partly blinded. A commencement had been made_ with the formation of Church road. A pipe culvert had been cleaned out on the Puketeraki road and the main road, a slip filled up, and the metal on the Merton station road raked in. North-East Valley Riding: Stone had been quarried for the Pigeon Flat road, and culverts had been repaired. A slip on the Waitati-Wakari road had carried away part of the thoroughfare, but the road had been widened and laid with manuka scrub in tho meantime. Gravel had been spread on some of the worst parts of the road, aid water-tables on the Reservoir road were being cleaned out. Hawks-bury Riding: Several slips had been removed from the Kiatoa road and Quarry road. A culvert on tho Main road at Goodwood, and another on Jeffries's road, had been repaired with old planks from Flag Swamp bridge. A few loads of gravel had been put on the Main road and on M'Calliun's road, and the upper portion of this road had been surfaced; also the road towards Flag Swamp. Hallum's track was now being attended to. Blucskin Riding: The river at Mitchell's ford had be-n banked with_ the stones removed from the bed of tho river, and tho gravel carted on to tho roads. Manson's ford was again washed out, but had been put in good order and the footbridge repaired. Water-tables had oeen cleaned out on the Mihiwaka station and Purakanui roads, and holes on tho Long Beach road filled in. The road at Purakanui station was supported by _ logs on the outside, which were beginning to give way, and Mr Foote had offered eome bluegum trees which were growing beside the road to repair it with. Two days' carting of gravel was required for the Waitati township roads. —Adopted. Accounts amounting to £252 wero passed for payment.
