TWENTY-EIGHTH REINFORCEMENTS.

HEARTY PUBLIC FAREWELL

Tho men of the Twenty-eighth Reinforcements happened upon a cold and bleak day for their farewell on Thursday, but there was nothing lacking in enthusiasm about the unusually large crowd that gathered at the station to cheer them on then- way. Curiously enough, this reinforcement is believed to make the largest body of men that has yet been sent from here at one time. The men were obviously in the best of spirits, and physic-Uy they certainly had no need to fear comparison with the best that have gone before them. The usual farewell arrangements were adhered to. The men paraded at the Drill H'all at 10 a.m., where they received private gifta from two good friends of the soldiers and copies of Testaments from the Otago Bible Society. Colonel E. R. Smith, who briefly addressed the men, referred to their cheerfulness, and congratulated them onleavinir at a time -when appearances were brightening. Many shops and places of business wore closed for an hour and large crowds lined the route of march to the station. The Southland and South Otago men, arriving at 10.55 a.m. tinder Maior Crowther and Sergeant-major Shortall. were promptly marched to tho Early Settlers' Hall, where the Women's Patriotic Association hacl most welcome tea and refreshments awaiting them. The local men were preceded on their march from the Drill Hall by the Coast Defence Band, which opened the proceedings, in Anzne square by loading the sinsring of the National Anthem. On the call of tho Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) three good sounding- cheers wer9 given for the men of Otago and' Southland who were about to leave for camp. The Mayor then m'oceeded to address the men, and was followed by Captain-chaplain G. H. Balfour. THE HOLT, The numbers of men from the various centres were: —Dunedin, 13 N.C.O.'s and 165 other ranks; Invercargill. 8 N.C.O.'s and 121 other ranks; Milton. 2 N.C.O's, 57 other ranks, and one tunneller; Oarnaru 1 N.C.O. and 33 men' They left in charge of Lietitenant M'Crorie. DEPASTURE FItOM MILTON. Tho South Otago quota of the Twenty eighth Reinforcements totalled 60, .and included two n.c.o.'s on probation, 57 rank and file, and one for the Tunnelling Corps The men assembled at Milton headquarter* on Wednesday evening to answer the roll call, paraded ugain on Thursday morning, and, headed by the Regimental Band, marched to the railway station, where they were accorded a hearty farewell by the assembled residents,
