BALCLUTHA.
April 16. —Good weather was experienced for the Easter holidays, but since then several showers of rain have fallen. During Easter the town, was very quiet, most of the residents being holiday-making at the seaside or further afield., Kuka Point, Port Alolyneux, was well patronised by visitors, and Ponnawea had also its quota of excursionists. Local Elections. —Tho election of a mayor and council of nine for tho Borough of Balclutha takes place on April 25, nominations closing on April IS. A great deal .of interest is not being evinced in the elections, and judging by present appearances it will be a difficult matter to secure sufficient men to form a council. The r> esent Mayor, it is rumoured, does not intend 10 offer his services for the mayoral chair, and several of the present councillors state that they will decline nomination. Salvation Army.—Tho local corps of tho Salvation Army, assisted by Bandmaster Eive, of Temuka, held its annual harvest
festival gatherings at the hall on Sunday. There was a good attendance of visitors at the meetings, and the produce, etc., contributed is to be sold at auction to-night (Monday). A Military Case.—Considerable feeling has been evinced locally over the alleged medical re-examination of a district young man who had been passed as fit for active and had had his appeal dismissed by the Military Service (Board. As a result of the second examination, it is stated, he has been rejected as unfit. Roll of Honour. —The local Presbyterian Church has now secured a roll of honour of its members who have joined the Expeditionary Forces, llov. S. "W. Currie, during his sermon on Sunday evening, made feeling reference to those who had gone out to fight for the King and country, and read out the lengthy list of names on the roll.
