THE TWENTY-FOURTH REINFORCEMENTS.

DEPAETUEE EOE CAMP. Bright weather prevailed on the 3rd on the occasion oi the departure of the men of tho Twenty-fourth Reinforcements from Dunedin for camp. As usual tho Duncdin men assembled at tho Drill Hall, and from there marched via Anderson Bay road, Princes street, and Stuart street to Anzac square. This is the first occasion on which men called up in tho ballot have been included, tho result being practically a complete roll. Only two men were not present and unaccounted for. The men, as a body, are a highly promising lot, and the proportion of open-air life men seemed large. At the Drill Hall short speeches were made by Colonel Stoneham and Mrs Macfie. As usual the men from the group area south of Dunedin arrived by the 11 o'clock train, and wero entertained by tho ladies at tho Early Settlers' Hall at morning tea, afterwards joining the Dunedin men in the station enclosure.

The Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark), after the National Anthem, called for hearty cheers for tho men about to go forth. 110 concluded by saying: They went to battle 'with tho certain knowledge that right was with them, and that right must win. The peoplo knew that they would fight as British soldiers could fight, and that they will show tho Hun that they were not decadent, but that there was tho real bulldog spirit in them. Every heart in the city echoed the prayer God bless them all and bring them back in safety and honour. Might they before long take part in the triumphal march into Germany and see our old flag flying victoriously over tho Kaiser's palace. He bade them Godspeed, good luck, and goodbye. Chaplain-major Fairmaid briefly addressed the men, and concluded by offering up a prayer.

Vioro cheers were given as tho men marched on the platform about 10 minutes to 12. Three or four minutes later the train was steaming out, the street at the north-end of the station lined with people anxious to secure tho last glimpse of those they loved. Tho Railway Department, on representations from the Patriotic Associa•i. had obligingly removed the Port Chalmers train that hitherto has blocked the view of the troop train as it steamed out.
