BURSARIES FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS.
CHRLSTCHURCH, December 30. The Hon. Mr Russell to-day announced that, tinder the new scheme inaugurated with the idea of doing something to roct : fy tho shortage of doctors in New Zealand, bursaries of £IOO each had hern offered! In tho following medical students in their fifth year:—R. S. J. Fitzgerald (Dunedin), F J." Appleby (Palmcrston), L. O. Mail (Midhurst, Tnranaki). (i. R. Cuthbert (Timaru), and R. B. Watson. Mr C. S. Hiclcs. a second year student, wil] receive a special bursary under the scheme. Mr Russell explains that one of the conditions is that tho recipients of the bursaries an required to guarantee to accept office for two years cither as house surgeon or assistant house surgeon in public hospitals or mental' hospitals. At tho close of two ..years' service the holder will bo free to c:o into private practice. It is honed that many of those who receive bursaries under the ocbemo will boeomepermanent members of the public medical service of tho dominion, and in this case ?r,ociril consideration and facilities will bo given to enable them to take their diploma of public health.
