DOWKTKG In fond remembrance of Corporal William Gibson Downing (K.Z.M.C., Canterbury Mounted Hides, Main Body, K.Z.E.F.), who died at Alexandria, Egypt, on December 14, 1915, from shrapnel wounds received at Anzac, Hardline' lies, only son of Mrs Kate Downing, Anderson Bay. Kot for a soul like thine, the calm Of selfish ease and joys of sense; But duty, more than crown or palm. Its own exceeding recompense. Kot gold, but only true men can make, A people great and strong; Men who stand, for truth and honour’s sake, They build a nation’s pillars' deep and lift them to the sky.
