FIRE AT INVERCARGILL
MAN LOSES HIS LIFE. INVERCARGILL, December 16. Messrs G. W. Woods and Co.'s motor garage was totally destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morning. Over 40 cars, many privately owned, were burnt. The building, which is of brick and covered about a quarter of an acre in the main block, was owned by .Sir J. G. Ward. The News building was seriously threatened, the intense heat, breaking the skylights. The damage is about £20,000. An examination of the debris disclosed the remains of John MTvor, aged 26 years, who slept on the premises. Insurances: On the garage building £3000; on the stock. £ISOO. Damage was done to the Grand Theatre to the extent of about £4O, and to Nisbct's carriage factory to the extent of £2OO.
