MANIOTOTO SHOW

The Maniototo A. and P. Association held its annual show on the society's grounds at Ranfurly on Thursday. The weather was dull and threatening, and for a time light rain fell, but not in sufficient quantity to interfere with the pleasure of the afternoon. The attendance was not as large as usual, though the entries as a whole were well maintained. The only notable falling off was in the shcop section ,the cattle and draught horse classes showing largely increased entries. The total number recorded this year, including the competitions, was about 180. The judging was carried through with unusual promptitude, and the officials generally deserve commendation for the completeness of the arrangements made. CATTLE. The cattle were considered by the judge (Mr W. Charters, of Ury Park, Mosgiel) to be a very creditable lot, and some old hands spoke of them as the best the Maniototo Show had ever had. The shorthorns were the best the judge had seen in the district. Mr J. T. Tisdall. of Strath-Taieri, secured four firsts and two seconds for his shorthorns, the only other award in this section going to Mr J. Weir, whose bull won a red ticket. It was a particularly good animal. The crossbred classes were well filled. Mr Weir, the most successful exhibitor in this section, secured first for cow in milk, Ih-st and second for two-year-old heifers, and third for one-year-old heifer. Mr J. Tisdall won in the class for dry cows, and Mr W. Pringle came first and second in the one-year-old heifers. The fat cattle were also a very satisfactory exhibit, and were sli,™n in excellent condition. Mr W. Pringle won firsts for the bullock over 7001 b, bullock under 6001 b, and fat cow. Mr E. Marslin got two seconds and Mr A. Marslin one in this section. Mr Tisdall's wins brought him 19 points, and Mr Pringle's totalled 17. HORSES. There was an increased entry hi the draught horse section, and as in past years Mr J. T. Tisdall, of Strath-Taieri, sent up a splendid lot of animals. The extent of his superiority over the local exhibits may be judged from the fact that of the 12 red tickets awarded 10 went to him. In the three-year-old fillies, aged dry mares, and pairs of mares or geldings, Mr Tisdall secured a first, second, and third in each case. The only championship wont to his two-year-old filly, .which was placed second as ayearling at the Duncdm Show. She is described as a beautiful mover, straight and true. The first award for gelding of any ago went to Mr W. 11. Mawhinney, with Mr A. Cleugh second; and Mr Cleugh won in the class for aged mares or geldings reared in Maniototo County, with Mr J. Glenn second. Mr W. Charters judged the draught horses . The light horses, which wore judged by Mr W. Turnbull, of Dunedin, were not forward in such large numbers as last year. They included three thoroughbreds of good, fashionable breed. Among these Mr E. J. Dougherty gained first for aged mare and mare in foal, and Miss B. Trotter second in each case. In many of the hackney classes there were only one or two entries. The best-paced hack class, however, drew out good competition; it was won by Mr E. J. Dougherty, with Mr D. Blanchard second, and Miss B. Trotter third. There wore eight mares or geldings in saddle up to 11 stone forward, the awards going to Messrs J. G. Weir, A. Guild, and A. Jordan in that order. They were a nice lot. The single driven .harness horses also made a good showing. Mr J. Peterson came first, Mr D. Blanchard second, and Mr A. Cromb third. These first and second positions were reversed in tho class for tho best twowheeled turnout. Miss B. Trotter secured first prizes for the best lady's hack and for the best lady rider. Messrs A. Cromb and D. Blanchard also figured' more than once in tho prizo list. The greatest number of points in thoroughbred and hackney classes was secured by Mr E. J. Dougherty. sheep owners in tho district, as it is in the middle of their busy season, and this sufficiently accounts for their lack of support. Tho only representatives of the Border Lei-* cester and Romney breeds were two rams owned by Mr J. Nicolson, which each secured a first prize. The four pens of store, sheep were the property of the same owner, and brought him three firsts and a second prize. The fat sheep classes drew better entries and some competition. Mr W. Pnnglc won first and second awards for crossbred wethers, halfbred wethers, and owes, Mr Nicolson getting first and second for two freezers not exceeding 1401 b live weight, and third in halfbred wethers and in ewes. Altogether Mr Nicolson secured 24 points, Mr Pringle being second with 16. DOGS. Ten collies were entered, Mr Rutherford giving first in the rough class to Miss Heffernan, in the smooth class to Mr A. Clough, and in beardios to Mr J. Nicolson. COMPETITIONS. Tho competitions, which were begun at an early hour immediately after the judging was finished, were of a most interesting nature, and proved very popular with tho public. Tho handicap pony trot for school children was won by G. " Berry, with V. O'Neill second. The leaping contest over three flights of hurdles drew out eight competitors, and was won by a heavy draught mare of Mr G. Robertson's, which nnver touched the timber once. Miss B. Trotter was second, and Mr E. J. Dougherty third. The same marc of Mr Robertson's won tho leaping contest by clearing 4ft Sin, the only other to pass 4ft being Mr Dougherty's, which was placed second. The polo contost was won by J. G. Weir, with J. Donald second and J. Lemon third. The rough treatment accorded their horses by two of the competitors drew the attention of Mr J. Craig, inspector of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and he gave the riders a timely caution. A second handicap pony trot for children was won by J. Walker, with J. O'Brien second. The sheep guessing competition was won by Lucy Jane Dowle with a guess of 23421 b, the correct weight being 2341 b.
