GUMDIGGERS' LOYALTY.
ASSURANCE TO MR MASSEY. WELLINGTON, June .22. The Prime Minister was to-day interviewed by a deputation of so-called Austrian gumdiggors from the North of Auckland, who represented that, although nominally- Austrian subjects, they wero in sympathy with Russia, and perfectly loyal to Great Britain. A large number enlisted in New Zealand early in tho war, and hundreds of others were also willing to so to the front, but the British Government could not soo its way to accept enemy subjects as soldiers. The deputation assured Mr Masscy and the Government that they need fear no trouble from them. They were quite satisfied with their treatment hero, and only desired an opportunity to show their gratitude. The Prime Minister said he was very pleased with the deputation's assurances.
