STRENGTH OF ENEMY FORCES. LONDON, June 20,
General Smuts's despatch dated April 30 gives details of operations in German East Africa.
The German forces are estimated at .16,000 men, of whom 2000 are white troops. Their artillery comprises 60 guna and 80 machine guns. They are organised in companies of 150 to -200, of whom 10 per cent, are whites, with an average of two machine guns per company. General Smuts eulogises General Tighe's work preparatory to the general offensive OFFICIAL REPORT. LONDON, June 21. Official : General Jdo&kins's column occupied Handeni on June 19, the enemy retreating towards the central railway, fighting a rearguard action with losses. General Northey's column occupied Altlangenburg, at the head of Lake Nyassa, on June 13. The enemy counter-attacked, but were repulsed, and are retreating northeast. The Belgian columns occupy a line between the head of Lake Tanganyika and the south-eastern extremity of Lake Victoria Nyanza.
