May 12. —Harvesting i; now a thing of the past, and winter ploughing Avill soon be general. Tho winter feed throughout the district is plentiful, and the grass is in a better state for to late in the season than it ha.s been for many years, owing to the mildness of the weather Personal. —Mr Robert Butcl, a well-known settler, who left here a couple of years ago for the Arrow district, has purchased Mr M. Shea's property near Balfour. His return will bo cordially welcomed. —After being without a resident Presbyterian minister for many months, arrangements have now been made for tiic Rev. Geo. W. T Hercus of Tapanui, to take charge of the Balfour district. The induction will take place at Balfour on May 26. Recruiting.—The personal canvass of the district under- the Government's recruiting scheme has been thoroughly completed in this district. The enlistments locally lately have been most satisfactory, as, in fact, they have been right through.
