HANMER SPRINGS.

May 12.—A very successful hare drive was held on St. Helens Station on May 7. The hares are to bo sent to the military hospitals in Britain. Over 50 sportsmen turned out, and 221 hares were secured. Heavy rain spoilt the shoot after luncheon, otherwise it is expected that over 400 hares would have been secured. This is the first of a series of hare shoots that will be held in the district. The Weather. —Over one inch of rain fell during the afternoon and evening of May 7, and the mountains were covered with snow. On May 8 there was a hard frost, 13deg being registered. On May 11 and 12 misty rain fell, sin. being registered at the Government Meteorological Station. Tourists. —The tourist season is practically over, very few visitors being at the Springs at present. The Lodge still has a lot of soldiers; a number of them took part in the recent hare drive. The new building will soon be completed, and is expected to be opened within six weeks' time.
