PALMERSTON NOTES.

PALMERSTON, May 11. ( The monthly meeting of the Palinerston School Committee was held on Monday. The number on the rolls and the attendances were as follows for the last month : Secondary Department: Roll, 1?; average attendance, 16. Primary Department: Roll, 221.2; average attendance, 206.8. During the month the Otago branch of tho Navy JL»eague forwarded a framed picture depicting an incident that happened in the present war. The inspectors of schools and of manual and technical work visited the school during last week. The new petrol gas lights in the Athenreum are working very well, and are a great improvement on the old lamps. It is now possible to read the papers in any part of the room, instead of only under the lamp. Although the shooting season for ducks has been open for 10 days, no ''bags" have been made by any of the local sportsmen. No doubt the scarcity of birds in this district is due to the -dry season.
