UNIVERSITY SENATE.

EXTENT OF ITS POWERS. WELLINGTON, May 9. In reply to a letter {rem the University Senate asking for a definition of the relations and powers tespeefcively of the Senate and the Board of Studies the Solicitor-general has informed them that legislation by the Senate mast take place either with the consent of the board or after full consultation therewith in default of consent. Tho Senate then passed a resolution asking for an amended Act to make it plain that the Senate has power to legislate without referring the subject back to the board for further consideration. A letter from the chairman of the hoard was received stating that the representatives of all colleges but Auckland desired the Senate to agree to a joint committee to arrive at an agreement as to tho interprctat.'on of certain clauses, and to produce something in the nature of Standing Orders; also to discuss the allied questions. The Senate decided to let the recommendations lie on the table till next annual meeting.
