SUSPECTED CASE OF SMALLPOX. VESSEL GOES INTO QUARANTINE. The Willoehra, with 233 soldiers on board, arrived at Port Chalmers on Sunday, but', consequent on the medical omcers wiio went aboard her finding a suspected case of smallpox, the vessel has been put into quarantine tor a period, it is estimated, of 14 days. The arrival of the Willoehra had been viewed with a certain amount of misgiving, so far as tho health of the men was concorned, as a death irom smallpox had already been reported from Albany. Drs Valintine (Chit* Health Officer for the dominion), Hope Lewis (Auckland), Watt (District Health Officer in Ocago), Borrie (Health Officer at Port Chalmers), and Champtaloup, and Captain Thomson (harbour master) went out to the steamer, which was anchored at the bend, in a launch. Although various rumours came to the shore party waiting to disembark tho men from those who had been out in motor launches that the steamer was to go into quarantine—the information being called cut from men on board,—it was not until the medical officers returned, at about half-past 1, that these rumours were known to be true. It appears that the medical men found no trace of any contagious disease until they came to examine practically the last soldier. The > suggestion is ottered that perhaps tho ship's medical officers were themselves a bit anxious as to the state of this man's health. At any rate, the local doctors decided that he showed typical symptoms of smallpox, and it was thereupon decided to order the vessel into quarantine. Furthermore, all the doctors who had boarded the vessel, and also Captain Thomson, had to be vaccinated before they returned to Port Chalmers. Apart from the fact of the suspicious case mentioned, the health of the men appeared to be excellent; they, in fact, were all looking well. One man, who is rather seriously ill from a. complaint of the kidneys, was brought up to the Dunedin Hospital, all precautions, of course, having been taken to seo that there can be no fear of any possible contagion, even if there is any tear in this particular Cf.se. Sixteen other men, who are ill from ordinary complaints, will be placed on Quarantine Island. As far as could bo ascertained, a number of the men will shortly be removed _ from the Willoehra, and tho remainder will, it is said, be taken to Quail Inland, Lyttelton. Our reporter had to go to outside sources to get some of ]n's information, Dr Valintine, who professed himself as very busy, evidently not fully realising that tho fact that the 233 men on board, as we'll as members of the crew, have relatives all over New Zealand anxious as to their welfare, made it a matter of importance that I he facts with regard to the nature and extent of the illness on board the troopship should lie disclosed readily to tho public through tho press. Word came through that the vessel was short of potatoes and fresh eggs, and arrangements were quickly made to send these

Unfortunately, another case of smallpox developed on Monday. It has been decided to place all tae 200 invalided soitUors on Quarantine Island. Dr Valintme (chief health officer for the dominion), who had the able assistance of Captain M'Donald (marine superintendent of the Union Steam Ship Company), and a number 01 executive officers, was busy all Monday making arrangements for the transfer 01 the men to the island. They will bo taken off the Wiliochra in barges, etc., for conveyance across the short span of water, 'ino sick men who were on the island have been removed to other Quarters. 'ihe two smajipox patients will be isolated in a small building at the top of the island, and the rest of tfie men in tho quarantine buildings. One of the medical officers of the ship and the five nurses will also be placed on tho island. The crew will be quarantined on the vessel. The other medical officer will also stay on board. As it is imperative that the ship should be put into commission again as soon as possible, the crew will be employed in cleaning up things and getting her ready for sea. A number of carpenters will be engaged to assist the crew in this work. They will be vaccinated, and will have to remain on board. The period of quarantine will last at least another 14 days. The soldier who is seriously ill was brought up to the Dunedin Hospital on Monday All possible precautions have been taken to prevent any chance of contagion. It is a rather remarkable thing that, on Sunday, it was the last soldier examined of the 233 invalided men who presented the typical symptoms of smallpox. A Press Association message from Wellington states that the relatives are being advised in all cases of the men's condition. LIST OF THE MEN.
