QUESTION OF COMPULSION.
SPEECH BY BISHOP JULIUS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 20. At the Christchurch Diocesan Synod
Bishop Julius, referring to the war, said;, ‘'While Lord Kitchener is silent it is certainly no business of mine to venture an opinion on the question of compulsion. All of ns could wish that it were possible to supply men and win the war op the voluntary system; but the Empire is not doing its best, and until it does there is little hope of victory. We cannot bo too thankful for the spirit of sacrifice manifest throughout the Empire, and not least of all in Mew Zealand. The people have given their sons ircely, and they are not weary of giving what else they have to give. Of course, there are some, both hero and at Home, making money by the war. The taxation can touch them more than it touches others. They must bo left to the divine judgment.”
