LEATHER WAISTCOATS FOR THE TROOPS.

Wo have received the following subscriptions to a fund for supplying leather waistcoats to the Now Zealand troops in accordance with Lady Liverpool’s appeal;— Previously acknowledged £245 5 4 Mrs Ormsby (Shag Valley) ... 10 0 Mrs Ross (Shag Valley) 1 0 0 Total ... £247 5 4 On Thursday evening, under the auspices of the Roxburgh Patriotic Committee, the local Chinese Band, assisted by local talent, gave a concert in aid of the Waistcoat Fund. The hall was packed, and the gross proceeds amounted to £29 8s 9d. Of this amount, £2O has been sent to the Women’s Association for the purchase of waistcoats, and the balance, after deducting expenses, will bo remitted later. At the conclusion of the first part the Mayor (Mr J. A. Roggicro), after briefly referring to Trafalgar Day, spoke of the effort that was being made throughout the dominion in aid of the Red Cross, and appealed to the people to assist. A collection was taken up, and resulted in £lO 5s being collected. This was further supplemented by £3 2s 3d thrown on the stage in response to Miss Craig’s singing of “Please, Give Mo a Penny.”

The sums of £3 Is and £4 13s 3d were realised from the sales of buttonholes and sweets by an energetic bevy of ladies. In all, £2l Is 6d was remitted to the Dunedin branch of the St. John Ambulance Association.
