LATE HON. J. A. MILLAR

THE FUNERAL. In wintry weather the funeral of the Flon. J. A. Millar, M.L.C., took place on the morning of the 20 th inst., the remains of the deceased gentleman being interred in the _ Northern Cemetery. The cortege, which left the residence of Mr A. E. Cohen in High street, was a lengthy one, and among those present were the Hon. J. Allen, Minister of Defence (representing the Government), Hon. J. T. Paul, M.L.C., the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr J j. Clark) and councillors, chairman of Otago Harbour Board (Mr J. M. Dickson, M.P.), and members of the board, chairman of the Dunedin Drainage Board (Mr J. S. Douglas) and members of tho. board, Dr Rutherford Waddell, Messrs John Roberts, C.M.G., T. K. Sidey, M.P., J. Craigie, M.P. (Timaru), A. E. Cohen (Evening Star), Jas. Hutchison (Otago Daily Times), H. D. Bedford, John Mill, W. Belcher ' (Seamen’s Union), E. Kcllctt (Carpenters’ Union), R. Breen (secretary, Trades and Labour Council), Captain Beaumont (representing the Marine Department), D. Larnaeh, J. Moloney, J. R. Sinclair, J. Sparrow, 11. Maxwell (Registrar of Electors), D. Cooke, H. Mitchell, Noil Galbraith. Watson Shcnnan, E. Roscvcar, and M. Mackenzie. The pall-bearers were Messrs Hawthorne Millar (deceased’s son), W. O. Millar (cousin). R. Caffm, and W. Tilslcy. Another son, who is at present in the Trentham camp, was unable to come to Dunedin. Numerous floral tributes were forwarded from all parts of the dominion, including a floral anchor from the family, and wreaths from the members of the National Ministry, the Otago Harbour Board, and the Dunedin West Committee. The Rev. Canon Small, of St. Mary’s Church, Mornir.gton, officiated at the grave. At the commencement of the business of tho Otago Education Board on the 20th the chairman (Mr G. C. Israel) said it was proper that the board should recognise the loss of a notable public man in the late Hon. J. A. Millar. Mr Millar, he said, although not associated closely with the board, bad always taken a keen interest in local education matters. Tie moved a resolution of sympathy with the widow and family, which was carried by members standing.
