THE RAPHAEL TRIAL
LONDON, October 13. The trial of Mrs Raphael has commenced at the Old Bailey. The evidence showed that her husband had an income of £IOOO a year under the marriage settlement. He had also received £BOOO from his father since his marriage in 1913. Counsel for the defence alleged that Mr Walter Raphael was paying for the prosecution of his own daughter-in-law. October 15. In the case in which Mrs Marjorie Augusta Raphael, said to be well known in Australia, was charged with alleged fraud and false pretences in obtaining credit at a leading hotel, and also in obtaining £SOO worth of jewellery and usm r the money so obtained to pay debts owing to a drapery firm, the jury stopped tne case and acquitted the accused. Mrs Marjorie Augusta Raphael, said to be well known in Australia, was committed for trial on charges of alleged fraud and false pretences in obtaining credit at a leading hotel, and also in obtaining £SOO worth of jewellery and using the money so obtained to pay debts owinss, to a drapery firm. The evidence showed that accused had been locked out of the hotel. Her husband filed a petition of bankruptcy in March.
