For some time shippers have been a\vare of a considerable delay in the handling of cargo transhipped at Australian ports for the dominion. A great deal of this seems to be transhipped at Sydney, and the inconvenience has become very much intensified since Dunedin lost its weekly communication with Melbourne and Sydney. _ Since that time the best port for transhipments for Dunedin is undoubtedly Melbourne, for goods are then handled only twice, whereas if transhipped at Sydney they have again to bo transhipped at Wellington; and if the vessel carrying the goods from Wellington to Dunedin happens to be at another wharf the goods have to be carted round, and thus handled again—all or which tends to depreciation. One instance has been pointed out to us —namely, that of the Tasmanic. This vessel arrived at Sydney from Gothenberg on the 16th ult., and under ordinary circumstances clients would look forward to receiving their transhipments not later than by the Manuka, which left Sydney on May 21. Cargo ex this vessel would, in the ordinary course, have reached Dunedin on May 30, but as tho transhipments did not even arrive in Wellington by the Westraha on Tuesday, June 1, Mr H. C. Campbell, who has several clients requiring goods from this vessel, cabled to the agents in Sydney, and received word that the transhipments were on board the Mocraki. which arrived in Wellington on Tuesday. A small portion of these arrived in Dunedin by the Monowai yesterday, and the balance should reach here by the Tarawcra on Sunday; otherwise they cannot be expected till Thursday, the 17th, when they will arrive by the Paloona.
