TRADE WITH THE EAST.
AUCKLAND, June 14. Colonel the Hon. James Burns, one of the principals of the Burns, Philp Shipping Company, who is a passenger on the Makura en route for London, states that the proposal that his company, in conjunction with the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, should establish a line of steamers trading between Japan and Australasia has definitely fallen through owing to lack of steamers and the high freights' offering in otherdirections. Trade, however, was steadily increasing between Japan and these dominions, and a new service would without doubt eventually be established. Colonel Burns said ho thought the steamers would include the Philippines and Fiji in their itinerary.
