BURGLARY IN AUCKLAND.
SENSATIONAL EPISODE. AUCKLAND, March 11. Ernest Varley, a grocer in Dominion road, had a sensational encounter with tw« burglars at midnight. Varley, who has been sleeping on tha shop premises since a previous attempt at burglary, and was armed with a revolver, heard the till opened in the adjoining shop, and shortly afterwards he heard a key inserted in the lock of his front door, which had been also fastened with a bolt. Varley slipped out of bed and released the bolt. Two men entered. Varley stepped back into a corner behind the door. In doing so he knocked down some tins of jam. Immediately he covered the burglars with a revolver, ordering them to put up their hands. He states that one of the burglars drew a revolver, whereupon ho (Varley) fired, shooting the man through, the arm. Both burglars bolted. Varley followed across a vacant section and captured the wounded man, whom he escorted to the police station. The second burglai escaped. The name of the prisoner is Eric Street. He is over 18 years old, a well-built young man over 6ft high.
