AUCKLAND, November 30. At tbe Supreme Court a youth named Abraham Merrick, who pleiided guilty in the lower court to a charge of maiming and killing five cattlo, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the Invercargill gaol. His Honor intimated that he would recommend the Governor to exercise his power of committing the prisoner to an industrial school if he deemed it advisable. December 2. Arthur Forbes Newbold. formerly county clerk at Kaurimu, appeared before his Honor Mr Justice Cooper at the Supremo Court this morning for sentence on six charges of embezzlement includng th« tlr'R of a cheque, t.o sum involved being £152. A sentence of six months' was imposed, INVERCARGILL, December 1. The criminal sittings of the Supremo Court were opened to-day before Mr Justice Sim. There are only four criminal cases. His Honor said the Grand Jury would have little difficulty in dealing with them, and true bills were returned on oath. Henry Morrison was charged (1) with discharging a revolver with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Francis Adolphus Hughes; (2) with assaulting the same man and causing him actual bodily harm. Ho was found guilty on the second count, with a recommendation to mercy, and was fined £2O, to Do imprisoned until the amount was paid, the term not to exceed three months. The accused is 63 years of age. John Kane, charged with discharging firearms to intimidate was found not guilty. William Henry Laythan, a Singer sowing machine employee, pleaded guilty to the misappropriation of £l3, and was sentenced to hard labour for 12 months.
