AUSTRALIAN MORTALITY
MELBOURNE, July 10. The Commonwealth Statistician (Mr Knibbs) has published statistics dealing with the mortality of single and married persons. In the case of males, the rates of mortality are markedly lighter for married men throughout life. In some important ages the mortality rate for single men is 50, 60, or even 70 per cent, in excess of that of married men of corresponding ages. In the case of females the opposite tendency holds. Between the ages of 15 and 44 (inclusive) the mortality rate for married women ranges from 60 to 80 per cent, in excess of that of single women. The selective influence in matrimony consequent on the rejection of unsuitables is considered an important factor, particularly in the case of males.
