LAWN TENNIS.

CLOSE OF WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS. LONDON, July 6. The Wimbledon championship meeting was brought to a close to-day. The challenge rounds resulted; — THE DOUBLES. N. E. Brookes (Victoria) and A. i. Wilding (New Zealand) defeated H. ItoperBarretb and C. P. Dixon (England), 6—l, 6—l, 5—7, B—6. Last year the Men’s Doubles were won by Eoper-Barrstt and C. P. Dixon, who beat F. W. Rahe and H. Kleinschroth, 6—2, 6—4, 4—6, 6—2. • - MIXED DOUBLES. j. C. Parke and Mrs Larcombe beat Wilding and Milo. Broquedis, 4—6, 6—4, 6—2. Parke and Mrs Larcombe were the winners in 1912, but were defeated last year by Hope-Crisp and Mrs Turkey. Wilding had the lead to the second set, 4—2 and 5 —4, but Mile. Broquedis failed badly, though she played some wonderful shots. LADIES* DOUBLES. Miss Morton (England) and Miss Ryan (IrelSnd) beat Mrs Larcombe and Mrs Hannan, 6—l, 6—3. The day was rainy. The first two sets were comnleted in 22 minutes. RoperBarrett was sound throughout, playing to the centre line in the hope of scoring off VVilding’s left or Brookes’s right. He poached continually ip the third set, showing remarkable activity, until Dixon, who had been very patchy, brilliantly assisted to win the set. The last set was called 3 all, 4 all, 5 all, 6 all. The match was a triumph for youth and physical force rather than science. Wilding was in superlative form, and probably did not miss more than five or six chances of scoring throughout. In the All-England Plate, open to players defeated in Hie first and second rounds of the championship, Dixon (England) defeated Harding, 6 —l, 6 —2. DAVIS CUP PRELIMINARIES. LONDON, July 7. Owing to business claims, Roper-Barrett will be unable to go to America in the event of England beating France. July 10. Mr Gordon Inglis, representing the Australasian Tennis Association, entertained the Australasian team at the Savoy on the eve of their departure for America to participate in the Davis Cup contest. Mr N. E. Brookes (Victoria), responding on behalf of the team, stated that this would probably be the last time he would play in an international team. He would do his best to regain the trophy. Mr A. P. Wilding (New Zealand) anticipated a keen struggle, with the result doubtful.

Parke, A. H. Lowe, Mavrogordato, and Captain Kingscote have been selected to meet the Australasians in America in the event of Britain defeating France at Wimbledon next week.

Trial matches for the defenders of the Davis Cup have begun. The press tabes a gloomy view of the prospects of the trophy being retained by America, and predicts a great difficulty in coping with the Australasian representatives. M‘Loughlin and Williams are regarded as certainties for America. July 9. Karl Behr and T. R. Pell have been selected as America’s representatives in the Doubles for the Davis Cup.
