Flour, £8 ss. Bran, Is 2d. Pollard, Is 3d. OAMARU STOCK MARKET. (Feoh Oub Own- Coerespondent.) OAMARU, July 11. Tho stock market has passed through an exceedingly quiet week. There is a strong demand for stock generally, but, while buvers are many, sellers are very few. Tho reduction of the area going under cereals, combined with the plentiful supply of feed and the bright prospects as to the future, has begotten an exceptionally good demand for sheep, especially for good young breeding owes. Those who have thorn hold firmly, and are even prepared in many cases to increase their flocks. Tiio south Iras been drawn upon to some extent, but the demand remains unabated. The yarding of sheep at tho weekly sale was the smallest that lias been seen for months past, and was composed mainly of fat animals. Fat wethers were more plentiful than usual, and sold at from 22s up to 28s 9d. Fat ewes, probably consequent upon the fuller supply of wethers, were a little weaker. One pen of prime ran up to 24s Bd, but prices for others tapered from 20s down to 14s, according to quality. Fat lambs sold well generally, prices ranging, however, all tho way from 24s Id, for a prime pen, down to 15s Id, for small sorts. A line of 11 four, six, and eight-tooth ewes reached 23s 6d, while owe lambs brought 17s lOd, and wether iambs 15s Bd. There was also a small yarding at the Duntroon sale yesterday, when hoggets of mixed sexes brought

17s and 13s; cull lambs sold at 14s 9d, and some full-mouthed ewes in low condition went at 12s. Sales by private treaty have been confined to fat stock, fat wethers having- been sold at from 21s to 245, and fat lambs at from 17s 6d to 20s. In cattle no business has been done outside of the saleyards, and very little there. At the weekly sale dairy cows sold at from £7 10s up to £ll, and heifers from £9 5s to £lO, va’ues, as disclosed by the bidding, being determined by quality and period of profit. Some young cattle were in the pens at Duntroon yesterday. Yearlings realised '£2 os, and 15-months-old £3 13s, ;

SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From- Our Own Correst’Ondent.) INVERCARGILL, July 11

The stock market, especially for sheep, continues in a very animated condition, all classes selling exceptionally well; in fact, at somewhat firmer prices than even those recorded a few weeks ago. It looks as if our market here has risen too much in the last two or three weeks, and from the values of fats are somewhat ahead of those ruling up north. Especially is this so as regards hoggets, while, if there is any margin in the value of ewes, it can only be slight. The only sale of any consequence this week was held at the Otautau yards on Friday, when there were representative entries of all classes. It was a lovely day, and the attendance of farmers and graziers was fairly largo. The bidding opened keen, and continued so right throughout the sale, and prices went even higher than at Winton a week ago. The demand was very keen for ewes and. also for hoggets. A nice line of two, four, six, and eight-tooth ewes brought 27s lid, while a lino of two and four-tooth ewes, rather on the small side, made 245. Good hoggets fetched from 17s fid to 18s, but this class was fairly reasonable in view of the fact that small wether hoggets made 15s to 16s. Wethers were in good demand, but very few were yarded, a pen of tvvo-tooths making 20s. There was only a small yarding of cattle, but, contrary to the usual experience at this sale, the bidding was rather spirited,, and it was quite apparent that the high price ruling for sheeff is going to have a hardening effect on the cattle market, as graziers who are not prepared to give the high prices ruling for sheen must go in for cattle. There is still a good demand for fat stock, and anything going in the yards is eagerly picked up by local butchers, while continued operations by outside buyers will keep prices up for some time. Prices may be quoted: — Fat cattle: Ox beef, 50s to 325; heifer, 28s to 295; cow, 24s to 255. CLEARING SALE. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Ltd.)- report having held, on account of Mr James Kemp, Hampden, a most successful clearing sale of dairy cows, horses, and farm implements. The day was beautifully fine, and there was a large attendance of buyers from the surrounding district, also from Oamaru, and as far south as Balclutha. The cows were shown in good order-, and, being a well-bred lot, competi- , tion was keen throughout the sale. The highest price obtained was for a Holstein crossbred cow, this animal, after spirited bidding, being I;nocked down to Mr Win. Nicholson, of Hampden, at £l4 15s. The rest of the herd sold at prices-ranging from £6 to £ll 2g 6d. Horses sold well considering that they were mostly aged sorts. Competition for the implements and sundries was good, and prices were exceedingly satisfactory. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. (Pm United Pbebs Association ) CHRISTCHURCH, July 14. There is no improvement to note in the local grain market, which is even quieter, more than it has been all through a very quiet season. Little or no grain is offering, and apparently there is no inquiry. The potato market is still dull owing to buyers in the Auckland market still holding off. The ton© of the market is easier, but few sales are being made, as the growers prefer to hold* rather than accept lower prices than these lately ruling. The Main Trunk railway is said to have made a material difference to the business that was formerly done by the South Island with Auckland. Supplies of potatoes and chaff are now railed through from the Wellington province, whereas before the railway was opened the South Island did 1 business by sea. The east coast of Wellington is now obtaining supplies of early seed potatoes from Auckland, and through this means a larger area of potatoes was grown in the Auckland province this season, which must have also had an important bearing upon the northern markets, and accounted for the lessened demand from there.
