OTAGO LAND BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Otago Land Board was held on the 9th; present—Messrs R. T. Sadd (Commissioner oi Crown Lands, in the chair), J. C. Anderson, G. Livingston), P. Kinney, T. A. Munro. Mr William .Vl'Kay applied .to have his perpetual leases. Nos. 98b and 1150, over section 2, block XVII, and section 8, block XV, Greenvale district, together with an adjoining area which ho holds under yearly license, converted into a renewable lease. — Approved. Mr David Arnold applied io purchase sections 106 and, 107, Komako village.—-All suitable unsold sections to bo reoffered at a price to be fixed by the Crown Lands ranger. Smith applied for an occupation lease over an area oi about 50 acres, being part of section 1, block I, \v akerield district. —Ranger to inspect and report. Ranger O’Neill reported upon the valuation .of improvements on runs 98 and 98a, Kauroo Hill. —Report adopted. Mrs Mary M‘ Kinmont applied for permission to occupy an area of about one acre above the foreshore opposite section 47, block VIII, East Taien district.—Approved ; rental £1 per annum Ranger O’Neill reported upon the application of Mr W. Wilson for a lease over section 7, block 11, Waipori town, being police reserve. —Granted; rent 2s 6d per annum.. Mr R. Hold'll, jun., applied for a license over section 19, block X, town of Clyde.— Granted; rent 10s per annum. Mr W. Milne wrote requesting that, in the event of his purchasing the freehold of sections 96 and 102, Ardgowan settlement, he be permitted to purchase plantation reserve, section 122, block 11, and the road leading to it between rections 94 and 107, same block, Oamaru district.—Declined. The board was asked to rescind its motion of Novembei 12, consenting to the transfer of sections 3.' to 37, block I, Blackstone district, from M M‘Devitt to Mr G. Armitage, and to withdraw its decision recommending for the Mim-ter’s approval the application from Mr M Devitt to subdivide lease-in-perpetuity ■ l ' .6 over section 13, block VI, and section 1 block XXII, and transfer to Mr Armitage the said section. —Rescinded accordingly. Mr Alexander M‘Donald applied for a renewable lease over sections. 12 and 15, part 9, block XV, Crookston district. —Approved. Mr George MTlattie requested: that a fresh copy of his miseellaneaus license be issued) to him, the original having been lost. —Approved. Mr C. J. Hanning applied for a renewable lease over closed road line adjoining sections 47 and 48, block X, Leaning Rock district, and requested that his yearly license over section 65, same block, be converted into a renewable lease. —Referred to the Agricultural Department. Ranger Atkinson, reported upon the valuation of improvements on section 22, block XIII, Moeraki district.—Title to issue to purchaser. Mr W. A. Bodkin, on behalf of Mr Thcs. Walton Brown, applied to have the land in Alexandra Town held by him underyearly license and residence area put up for sale at public auction. Mr Bodkin made a similar application on behalf of Mr Wm. Bowler. —The host was referred to the warden, and the second to the ranger. Mr S. C. Herons, on behalf of Mr Jas. B. Gilmore, applied to purchase certain Crown lands in Benger district, at present held under title from the warden. —Declined ; board would consider application for occupation lease. Ranger Atkinson reported upon the damage caused on sections la (l.i.p. 1389. Angus Macaulay), and 2a and 7a (l.i.p. 1390, John King), Stewart Settlement, by the flooding of the "Waitski River.—Left in the hands of the commissioner. Mr Thos. Gordon requested that he be allowed to withdraw his application for an occupation lease over section 82. block I, Benger distrVt.—Application withdrawn. Martha Roughan applied for a license over an area of about two aer°s adjoining section 2, block XX, Tuapeka East district. —Approved. Further consideration was given to the application from Mr Wm. Williams for an occupation lease over section 89. block X. Leaning Rock district.—Approved at rental of 9d ner acre. Mr R. Dickison applied for permission to occupy an area of about four acres below the bridge on the Taieri River.—Approved, rental 5s per annum. The Engineer, Ta ; eri County Council, wrote requesting that a chain road bo reserved through section 2a, block 111, Sut ton district.—Resolved to agree to a road being taken along the railway lino, Mr Roberts’s fence to be re-erected on the new boundary by the county. Consideration was given to the case of . Mrs Annie-M. Ferreau, who had failed to show cause why her lease 475, over section 19, block XI, Tautuku district, should not be declared forfeited for non-compliance with the improvement conditions thereof.— Declared forfeited.

Mr W. A. Bodkin, on behalf of Mr H. R. Nind, applied to surrender his occupation leases over sections 77 and 86, block VIII, and 49 and 78, block IX, Leaning Rock district, and requested that he be granted in lieu thereof a renewable lease over the said sections. —Approved. Mr F. G. Hyde applied for permission to take a cron of oats off an area of about 15 acres of that pbrtlon of reserve on the Lindis River granted him under miscellaneous license 2516, and further requested that ho be allowed to sow the area down in grass. —Approved. Messrs Wright, Watson, and Harrington applied for a reduction in royalty on their timber licenses 106 and 107 over areas in blocks I and 111. Tautuku district.—Declined. Sophia Lewis wrote requesting that she and her husband be granted renewable or occupation leases over the following areas over which they at present hold yearly licenses: —(a) M.L. 1859. section 76. block VIII, Leaning Rock district, 207 acres 3 roods 19 poles. Robert Lewis lessee; (b) M.L. 2254, part section 34, block VII. Leaning Rock district, 114 acres, Sophia Lewis lessee.—Declined. Mr Arthur 'Jopson Applied to purchase an area of 20 acres adjoining sections 22, 21, and 27, block I, Blades tone district.—Action deferred. The authority of the board was requested for the Receiver of Land Revenue to deal with the sum of £25. being valuation of improvements on section 58, block IX, Glenomaru district.—Approved. Ranger Atkinson reported upon the ap-

plication by Mr Patrick Lennox to purchase 100 or 150 bluegum trees from the plantation reserve on Ardgowan settlement.— Granted, subject to ranger’s supervision, at 5s per tree; any fencing damaged to be repaired by the applicant. Messrs Duncan and MacGregor requested that they be allowed to withdraw their application to transfer from Mr Wm. Scott to Mr Ernest Geo. Mollison a half-interest in l.i.p. 1318 s, over sections 61 and 64, block X, Leaning Rock district. —Approved. Mr F. Atkinson applied for a grazing license over section 10, block XII, StrathTaieri district. —Approved; rental 7s 6d per annum. . The Secretary, Otago Education Board, wrote requesting permission to purchase for the purpose of a school site on area of about three - acres on section 16a, Conical Hills settlement, the lessee of which stipulated that he receive a lease of E.R. allotment 30a in lieu thereof. —Recommended for Minister’s approval. Further consideration was given to the application by Mr W. R. M'Kean, on behalf of Mr John N. Robertson, for an occupation lease over an area of about 21 acres in block I, Fraser district.—Cohsideration was deferred until a report was received from the Warden on Mr Weaver’s application. The Clerk of the Olutha County Council forwarded a. statement of “ thirds ” and “ fourths ” for the period October 23, 1913, to January 31, 1914-.—Approved. An application from Mr John Sharp for a license over adjoining section 46, block VI, Rankleburn district, was reconsidered, and the former resolution was rescinded, the matter to be brought up again. Ranger O’Neill reported upon the application of Mr Thomas Morris to occupy Bush Reserve, section 54, block IV, Gatlins district.—Recommended for approval of capital value of 25s per acre, or renewable O’Neill reported upon the application of Mrs, Becker for an occupation lease over an area of about 4 acres on run 2441, held under s.g.r. lease No. 516, by Mr J. MTntosh. —Consideration deferred. Ranger O’Neill reported upon the valuation of section 5, block VII, Glenomaru.— Late lessee to be offered a temporary license for nine months at rental of 3s per acre for that period. , Ranger O’Neill reported upon Bush Reserve, section 21, block 11, Gatlins. Retained as bush reserve. Ranger O’Neill reported upon the application of Mr Percy Shaw to purchase a piece of land and portion of closed road lino fronting section 15a, block 111, Woodland district. —Approved, at capital value of £2 per acre, subject to consent of local body. Ranger O’Neill reported upon section 14, block X, Woodland district.—To be reoffered on optional,system, capital value £1 2s 6d per acre, value of improvements £5 Ss. . . Ranger O’Neill reported upon various subdivisions of section 2, block V. Lauder district. —Resolution of June 4 rescinded; .amended subdivisions approved; Messrs Francis and Ryan to be offrecd renewable leases of approximately 19 acres and 11 acres respectively; Warden’s consent to be obtained. Ranger O’Neill reported that the following lessees in the Greenvale district were not complying with the residence condition, of their leases: —Mrs Hannah Edgar, r.l. 121, section 53, b'ook I; Mr W. A. Harris, r.l. 13, v.h.a., section 59, block IV; Mr Samuel Dunn, r.l. 14, v.h.a., section 50, block IV. —It was resolved to call oh the selectors to cause within 14 days why their leases should not be declared forfeited. Ranger O’Neill reported upon the position of gravel reserve, section 15, block VIII, Glenkenich district. —Local body to bo asked to select one and a-half acres as gravel reserve; remainder to be offered at auction at a capital value of £5 per acre, with value of fencing added. Mr William Allan requested exemption from residence on section 15, block 111, Leaning Rock district, which he held under r. 125, and Mr C. L. Dougherty requested exemption from residence on the s.g.r. 225, d.d.—Granted during the pleasure of the Board. Mr John Phillip, lessee of run 121 c, requested exemption from residence thereon for a period.—Approved during the pleasure of the board. Mr J. C. Vidal applied for exemption from residence on his s. run 330 c, as he purposed living on his freehold section, in close proximity to the run.—Granted.

Tho board resumed on the 9th mst. Ranger Leonard reported upon the following applications for occupation leases over areas on Mount Pisa run: —(a) Application 6026, Mr Iver Johnson, 76 acres; (b) Application 6025, Mr Lawrence Johnson, 100 acres.—Both adjourned to enable the applicants to appear. (c) Application 6034, Mr John Mills, 50 acres.—Resolved to grant 25 acres, subject to warden’s consent and advertisement, at £3 per acre. Ranger Leonard reported upon the application of Mr George Waide for an occupation lease over an area of 100 acres in Tairas district, being part of block reserved for closer settlement when the Morven Hills runs were cut up.—Resolved to decline Waide’e application, and cancel the license held by Mr E. J. Waters on August 15, with a view to offering the land to public competition. • Ranger Leonard reported upon the application of Mr Isaac Thompson for an occupation lease over an area of about 60 acres in Bannockburn district. —Referred to warden, and to be advertised. Ranger Leonard reported that Mr Henry Williams had not completed the boundary fence between his section 9 and section 8, block IX, Tai-ras district. —Resolved that if improvements were not effected by next meeting the lessee’s interest would bo declared cancelled.

Ranger Leonard reported upon section 2, block XXXV. Arrowtown. —Resolved to reoffor on the optional system at £3 per acre, weighted with £2O valuation for .improvements.

Ranger Leonard reported upon the following applications for areas in block I, Mid-Wakatipu district:—(a) Mr William Thorn Haines, section 28, renewable lease; (b) Mr Merlin Pasco, section 6, to purchase, —Applicants to apply under section 129 of “The Land Act.” Mr A. J. Sullivan, lessee of s.g. runs 221 l and 221 j, wrote asking for permission bo live at Clyde cn account of the distance of the nearest school from his run. —Granted during the pleasure of the board.

Mr John Lothian applied to occupy part section 6, block XIV, Maniototo district, at present held by Mr Leslie F. Reid under yearly license, and, in the event of the application being granted, asked permission to cultivate about 20 acres of the said section.—Declined; license held by Mr Reid cancelled. Mr Archibald Moffat applied to have sections 7 and 10, block XVI, Crookston district, over which he held yearly licenses, grouped with the sections he held under pastoral license 1175.—Declined; matter of dealing with land referred to ranger for report. The Chief Surveyor, Otago,Land District, submitted a scheme for the subdivision of section 1, block XXXVII, town of Alexandra, and also for section 72, block I, Leaning Rock district, for proposed fruit farms. —Approved. The following applications to purchase freehold of land held under occupation with right of purchase were approved: O.r.p. 194 L, section 15, block VI, Woodland district—Mr Joseph George Reid, lessee; o. 244, section 15, block VII, Woodland district—Mr Andrew Allan, lessee; o.r.p. 328, section 24, block IX, Woodland district —Lydia Shutt, lessee. Mr David William Thompson applied for rural land under 0.r.p., section 23, block XI, Clarendon district.—Approved. Mr J. Mr James Riordan applied for a further area of 50 acres to be included in the occupation lease recently granted him over section 40, block VI, Benger district.—Referred to .ranger for report. in them part of section 9, block X, in lieu of those parts of sections 7 and 8 which had been for some years utilised as a road. —Recommended.

Ranger O’Neill reported upon the application of the Maniototo county engineer to have sections 4 and 5, block XII, and section 20, block XVI, Ranfurly town, placed under the control of the Maniototo County Council. —Council recommended to arrange with Mr Morgan to store material on section 20, and that steps be taken to set apart sections 4 and 5 for county purposes.

Ranger O’Neill forwarded a suggestion with rspect to the capital value of section 1, block VI, Alexandra town. —Valuation of £ls approved. Consideration was given to the question of the subdivision of the Puketoi runs, and it was resolved to leave the matter in tnc hands of the commissioner. Consideration was given to the case of Air Andrew D. Elliott, who was called upon to show cause why his lease over s.g. runs 220 d and 220 g should hot be declared forfeited for breach of the residence condition thereof. —It was resolved that no action be taken at present, lessee to be informed that he must comply strictly with the conditions of the lease. Mr Wilfred Bowson applied for an occupation lease over section 92, block X, Leaning Rock district.—Referred to warden, and to bo advertised. An application from Mr Henry Geo. Sicdeberg was declined.
