POSITION ON THE RAND
CAPETOWN, August 19.
The railwayman's conference at Bloemfontein reversed the previous decision not to participate in the commission which is to inquire into their grievances, and it was resolved to support the candidature of the secretary.
Mr Lionel Phillips, referring to Mr Kotze’s report, states that his remarks apply to 1912, since which time there has been a marked improvement in the miners' state of health.
August 22
The Trades Federation has agreed to attend a conference if it is separately represented apart from miners.
It will also confer with the Minister of Mines respecting legislation for nonmining industries. Owing to Sir G. H. Farrar's protest Lord Gladstone withdraws, and has apologised for his statement that the mineowners on July 5 declined to enter Johannesburg for the purpose of conferring with Mr Botha and Mr Smuts. Sir G. Farrar adds that they were present, but owing to the disorder the Ministers decided that the conference should be hold at Orange Grove.
