The amount of money made by kauri gumdiggors in North Auckland is sometimes astonishing. Mr R Keene, of Wellington, who recently made an extensive tour of the district, told a Wellington reporter that on one occasion ho had met two diggers—father and son —who had secured £3 and £4 worth of gum respectively for a morning’s work. In districts where “chipped gum” is obtained, diggers often secure three or four sacks a day, at a price of 11s 6d per sack. This “ chipped gum ” is gum in a finely divided state, and is »xported to Germany, where it is used in the manufacture of linoleum. It is often found in very large deposits.
