FIRES
INVERCARGILL, August 24. A lire occurred at 9.30 a.m. to-day in a bootshop in Deo street, owned and occupied by Mr John M‘Curdy. An addition was bein'? made to the building, and some bags of lime had been left near a wall. Heavy rain fell during the night, and the water fell on the lime, thus causing the outbreak. The building was seriously damaged, and the stock suffered considerably frpm tiio heat and smoke. The insurances were:— ■Stock; South British office, £1400; New Zealand, £800; United, £2OO. Building: South British, £450; Alliance, Liverpool and London and Globe, and Standard. £225 each. ALEXANDRA, August 25. A house, the property of Mr Stewart, was totally destroyed by fire last night.
