FIRE ON THE RAKAIA
DISCHARGING AT ALBANY. PERTH, August 20. The steamer Rakaia, wheat laden, en route to Cardiff, has arrived at Albany for bunkering purposes, and with fire in her No. 3 hold. She began discharging her cargo into lighters immediately, but the smoke renders the work very difficult. ALBANY, August 20. The seat of the fire is on the starboard side of No. 3 hold. There was also another outbreak in the lower crosshead bunker. The Clayton patent fire extinguisher was used, and men are working with smokeproof helmets. The hold contained 15,000 bags of wheat, a good deal of which, including 500 damaged bags, has been discharged into hulks. August All the burning cargo in the Rakaia has been removed from No. 3 hold, but the fire in the crosshead bunker is still burning. Several bulkhead plates have been buckled through the heat. The Rakaia discharged a Canadian cargo in New Zealand, and loft Dunedin on July 22 for Sydney to load wheat for Cardiff. She took a full wheat cargo from Sydney.
