THE AMERICAN TARIFF
WASHINGTON, August 20,
The Senate has carried the President's free sugar programme, the Democrats defeating a final motion favouring a compromise on the duty.
August 21. The fight over the wool schedule is expected to be reached immediately. The democratic success' over the sugar schedule inclines the party to the belief that the wool schedule will be carried with little difficulty. The probability is that the final vote on the wool question will bo similar to that whereby the sugar proposal was carried.
August 23.
The wool schedule fight has begun in the Senate. The Republicans are strongly objecting to reductions. Two Senators spoke for six hours, characterising the tariff as a political one instead of, as Democrats claimed, being for revenue purposes only. Senator Penrose and Senator Lafallette proposed alterations, but the Democrats refused to discuss them.
Senator Penrose claimed that the Bill unduly favoured Britain, and actually to Britishers the measure seemed too good to be true.
