A CAUTIOUS MINISTER.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 11. To a deputation which came to him thi» afternoon, asking for something like £1609 or £2OOO for the construction of a bridletrack from Bell Town (Nelson province) to .Mount Radiant, a distance of 6 or miles, the Minister of Mines (the Hon. W. Fraser) replied that the request for such a sum for such a purpose was quite *4 impossible one to grant this year.. Ihe track, it was stated, would open up Karamea with Tadmor, and would give access to the settlement of the county, apart altogether from the metallurgical (particularly copper) possibilities of Mouiii Radiant.
The Minister declared that the Government was not going into any speculativa business. The people concerned might b« satisfied that they had a second Mounl Morgan there, but the departmental report was not so roseate.
The deputation pressing its claims, th« Minister declared that while he wished t a help them they must satisfy him that there would bo some chance of a return for the largo outlay. Eventually the Minister decided to meet the deputation again to-morrow evening, when he would have consulted the departmental officers.
