BUTTER AND CHEESE MARKET.

HOME CHEESE AND BUTTER MARKETS. Writing under date July 4 to Mr J. R. Seolt, secretary of {he South Island Dairy Assoc ton, one of the oldest and most experienced London produce merchants has this to say;—“The dominant note here in the cheese market, as you probably already know, is tho further advance in Canadian cheese. It is making about 8s from bottom, and at the moment there is much excitement in Canada, to-day’s quotations ranging from 65s 6d to 66s 6d, c.i.f., for finest, and Quoboos 63s 9d, c.i.f. Some of the early ‘bears’ had settled at 7s per civt, and aro doubtless thankul. This may lead to an awkward situation, for us next season in New Zealand, especially in the event of a reduced United States import duty of l|d per lb in October.” This reduced duty will, of course, have the effect of diverting a lot of Canadian cheese to Amotita and restricting the supply to England.” The writer reports on the butter market as follows:—“ Busmess in New Zealand i# practically at. a standstill, Siberian claiming chief attention. Arrivals of the latter are

heavy, now being the flush of the season, and no profits are being made at present. ‘Bear’ tactics again to the fore! Legiti mate trading quite a thing of the past.”
