CANTERBURY SHEEP-OWNERS’ UNION.
At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Sheep-owners’ Industrial Union of Employers, held last week at Christchurch. Mr L. G. D. Acland presided over an attendance of about 20 members. The committee, in its annual report, express with regret the death of several valued members, including Mr F. G. Bullen, formerly the wellknown owner of Green Hills, Waiau ; Mr A. Macf&'lane, of Achray, Rotherham, and Mr J. Dampier-Crossoly, of Scaitcliff, Waikari. The machine shearing classes held ut Christchurch and Ashburton had been well attended during the season. The South Canterbury Branch of the Farmors’ Union asked for assistance to inaugurate a class, and the committee afterwards decided to grant £25 to the Ashburton and Wairnatc Technical Classes and to the Timaru Branch of the Farmers’ Union on the understanding that the grants be expended on giving instruction on biado shearing, as the committee thought some practical support, should bo given to such. The number of engagements made through tho exchange for the year was 2027. as against 1954 for tho previous year. The financial position ■was sound, there being a credit balance of £95 18s lid. The roll disclosed a membership of 591. The election <?f officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr L. G. D. Acland; ■vice-president, Mr L. C. Gardiner; honorary ’■'treasurer. Mr E. G. Staveley; auditor, Mr Thornhill Cooper; and a large committee. It was decided to recommend the committee to give prizes for machine and blade shearing. Mr T. S. Johnstone was accorded a vote of thanks for the use of his shearing shed at Glenmark.
