RAILWAY RATES.
PLEA FOR THE CHILDREN. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON. August 13. The Minister of Railways stated to-day that tho Government could not see its way to carry all children tinder five years of ago free on the railways. Mr Witty, who asked a question on the subject, said that at present there was no encouragement for people with large families to travel. If the Minister granted the desired concession it would increase the revenue-, as many more people would travel on the railways. Mr Bradnev said he thought that the concession asked for should be grant'd. Many carriers carried children up to '2 years of age free, and he did not see whv the Railway Department should not do the same. 11 (• was sure that it would not lease by it. Mr Buxton said that small children did not usually occupy a seat, and lie thought the concession was one that might be granted. Mr F. H. Smith spoke jo a similar effect. Mr Forbes said this was a direction in which rho Government could assist people with small incomes.
