APPLES FOR SOUTH AMERICA.
TO TILE EDITOR
Sin, —I have just become acquainted with your very splendid paper through the kindness of a New Zealand man who is living here. 1 have just read in the last number that there is a good opening for New Zealand apples in tho Argentine. Am very pleased to sec New Zealand putting forth her energies. Now, I am a Presbyterian nrssionary working in Brazil, having finished my twentieth year of service a few weeks ago. In view of my long experience, I think I can assure you there ic in Brazil tremendously large opportunity for fruits f“om the temperate ones, and 1 think New ”ealai;d ought to step in and get a good share. Apples are very dear in Rio de Janeiro, a small one sometimes costing as much an 3d. 1 think that not only Brazil con... become a largo market, hut the whole of South America. Of course, South America has plenty of native fruit, but it is nearly all tropical, such as pineapples, mangos, etc., and such fruit as apples and nears, but chiefly apples, am eagerly sought for. Please allow mo to add my very best wishes for tho well-being of your country, of which wo English aro very proud.—l am, etc.. (Rev.) Joseph Orton. 45 Cumber'and road.
