RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

C.J.C. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING,

BERCOLA WINS THE STEEPLE CHASE. (From Our Special Reporter.) First Day—Tuesday, August 12.

A cold raw day ushered in the National meeting, and a few spots of rain fell. A dense fog settled on the course after the first race, but it lifted later on and the spectators obtained a fairly good view of the sport, although the light was never particularly good. The track provided fairly sound going, and the attendance w r as probably an easy record for a Grand National mooting.

Burnbank looked to hold a winning chance in the Hunters’ Hurdles until ho reached the last fence, which threw him out. This left Margo in charge, but she got the gobye from Buster and Umeraboy in the run homo, Buster winning all out by half alength. Margo was a length away, and then canio Hunokaha, Agatha Green, and Corso. Rororni was sent out favourite, but he broke a blood vessel ami was pulled up. A fairly well bucked horse in Bandalero was never dangerous. Morning was elected a very warm chance in the Trial Hurdles. He took charge rom Waitoto after passing the mile post, and, comfortably stalling off Prince Eddie, won by over two lengths, with Napper Tandy a moderate third. Waitoto dropped out over half u-milc from home, and Combination jumped badly. Watch Chain led out from the start of the Jumpers’ Elat Race, but was steadied, and gave way to Red Earl, who led CoronettecT, Goodwin Park, and the Rover to the far turn and up to the straight. Once in line for home Goodwin Park closed up and took charge inside the distance. He finally won by a length and a-hulf from Red Earl, whilst Marton, who looked to have a good chance down the running, was close up fourth. The last named run a really good race, and might have been closer up hut was not ridden right out. Stevens just boat Coronetted for llfth place, the latter appearing to (ire a hit at the finish after being close up all the way. The Rover ran a good race, hut Watch Chain did not get dangerous at the finish. Abcrbrothock was unsound, and Ribston Pippin also came in a bit tenderly after his gallop. The jumping was excellent in the early part of the Grand National Steeplechase, all the field shaping well with the exception of Bercola, who slightly hooked two or three of his fences. Ho made the same mistake in the second round. Captain Jack ran off at the first, and Gold Pin at the second of the kennels double. Coming down the straight the second time Glenrnore was in charge, and had Bercola as his nearest attendant, whilst the Spaniard, Dorando, and Nedra were all lying fairly handy. Paritutu was running a dozen lengths away, and The Native, after being well up at the first couple of fences, dropped right back. Riro Atu came'down at the stone wall, and, going to the far turn, Glenrnore was closely pursued by Bercola, the Spaniard, Nedra, and Dorando. Paritutu had not Jmproved his position, and The Native was running second last. Going to the second last fence, Glenrnore. who Appeared to be travelling fairly wejj, was still in the van. Paritutu ran off at this fence, and at the last fence Glomnoro and Bercola rose together, but the latter made a slight blunder. Nedra, The

Spaniard, and Dorando were right up ai this stage. A great finish saw Bercola beat The Spaniard by a short neck, while Glenmoro was a head away third, and Nedra, a short length off, fourth. Dorando finished six lengths away, and The Native about 20 lengths behind. It was the greatest finish ever seen in connection with the Grand National Steeplechase, as far as so many horses having a chance at the last fence was concerned, and there was practically little or nothing between the first three as they flashed past the post. Nedra ran a really good race, but Dorando did not stay on tna run home. Pariiutu was beaten when he missed the second-last fence, and The Native put up a poor display. Otehau beat Tairiki in the run from the last fence in the Tally-ho Plato. The Cutter was not too artistically handled, otherwise he might have won. Ceylon hung a trifle at the rise of the barrier for the Winter Cup, ;n which Buff Gauntlet took charge in the first few strides and led Mummer, Sea King, and Kilmeuy along the back. Mummer had Buff Gauntlet beaten shortly after going half a mile, and landed first into the straight. Inside the distance Kilrain challenged Mummer, but here Parky came on the scene, and going on won all out by half a length from Kilrain, who beat MunV) mer by close on two lengths. Then cam< Awahou, Royal Arms, and Pilgrim’s Way Buff gauntlet finished second last, just in front of Hongahere. A well-fancied horse in Glenfinnan did not get dangerous, and Oxenhope and North-East also tailed to get near the money at the finish. The winner was running about eighth going along the back, and Uad to travel a shade wide to get with the loaders, as they swung into the straight, so that his win was not marked by any great element of luck. After the race the stipendiary stewards cautioned his rider for coming in too soon as ho made h;s final effort. Kingsway ran off at the first fence in the Enfield Steeples, in which Windage took up the running. As they went at Cutts’s fence, however, ho was shirking it a bit, and he stopped at the first of the kennels double, where Hunokaha refused. This left Tim Doolan and Rufus in front, and in the run home the former won by eight lengths from Ranter, who beat Rufus from tho home turn. Royal Medal was a moderate fourth, being the only other to finish. A warm favourite in Tree Lucerne wound up the day by being * always fairly prominent in the Avonhead Handicap and winning by a length and a-half from Stamboul, who boat Gold Cup by half a length. Achilledes, Scottish Star, and Vanquish were next, in that order. The totalisator investments amounted to £43,098 10s. At tho third hurdle Lady Marcia ran off, and Bnrnbank led round the turn, while Buster made a forward movement. Morning easily hold his own, and won comfortably by a couple of lengths from Prince Eddie, who was a similar distance in front of Napper Tandy. The Native, Paritutu, and Gold Pin took tho first fence together. After crossing tho stand double tho field were well bunched with the exception of Captain Jack, who was a long way back. Bercola was leading Gold Pin at Cutts’s, this pair being closely followed by The Spaniard and Nedra. Gold Pin and Bercola were almost on terms at the kennels double, with Glenmore and Dorando close up, Paritutu and Nedra occupying fourth and fifth positions respectively. Captain Jack ran off here. At the sod wall the order was Glenmore. Bcrcola, Dorando, The Native, Paritutu, The Spaniard, and Nedra, the last four being

srell behind the leaders. Entering the Straight Bercola and Glenmore were in front, Dorando being third eight or nine lengths away. Then oame Nedra, The Spaniard, Paritutu, and The Native. Bcrcola and Glenmore showed the way out 3 { the straight, though Dorando, The Spaniard, and Nedra had reduced the gap to four lengths, while Kiro Atu, Paritutu, and Gold Pm were a long way in the rear. The same order was maintained to the post and rads, where Riro Atu fell. At the kennels double Glenmore held a slight lead over Bercola, after whom oame 'the Spaniard, Dorando, and Nedra, with Paritutu making up his lost ground. Gold ran off. There was practically no change in the order till the brush fence was reached, where Bercola was showing the way to Glenmore. The Native had made up a lot of ground, but Paritutu ran off asd spoiled his chance, which, however, appeared to bo very remote. In a, magnificent finish Bercola gained the verdict by a head from. The Spaniard, who was a good head in front of Glenmore, followed by Nedra at an interval of a length. Dorando was fifth. The Native sixth, and Kia Ora last. Time, 7min 24 4-ssee. After a false start the field moved away well together, and coming to the first hurdle the colours of Beacon and NorthEast were most prominent, while Ngatiruanui was close up, followed by Loch Mabin and Goodwin Park, with Morning well back. North-East and Beacon led past the stand and round to Cutts’s, where the pair drew still further away, and had a cood lead from Loch Mabin, with Morning, Watch Chain, and Flingot running next, and Bercbla last. At the hurdle at the mile and a-quartcr post Rod Earl fell, and Beacon and North-East carried on the running down the back stretch, while Morning also improved his position, and Marion moved up. Just the six-furlong post North-East made a bad jump, and dropped right back, while Morning and Loch Mabin drew level with Beacon. Morning and Loch Mabin was in front at the entrance to the straight, with Marton and Goodwin Park running next, while Watch Chain was also in the running. In a good race home Morning hold his advantage, and, being nicely handled, won comfortably by two lengths and a-half from Marton, with Loch Mabin a similar distance away, third, followed bv Goodwin Park, Beacon, and Flingot in' that order. Windage ran off at the kennels double, and Dorando went on in front from Ranter and Tim Doolan. Running round the top turn there was little change except that Glenmore took third place, with the Spaniard fifth behind Tim Doolan. Dorando jumped the last fence well clear of Glenmore, after whom came planter and Tim Doolan. Easily holding nis advantage in the run homo Dorando won by three lengths from Glenmore. ISLINGTON HANDICAP, Of 200sovs. Ono mile.

3—Sir Geo. Clifford’s Glenfinnan, 10.2 (B. Deely) 1 B—Mr8 —Mr Robinson’s St. Aidan, 9.2 (H. Donovan) 2 I—Mr M'Kelvie’s Awahou, 10.9 , (A. Olliver) 3

St. Aidan and Bulletin were the quickest to show out from a good start, and this pair led a bunched field in which The Comet was prominent, round the top turn. When the straight was reached Awahou improved

liis position, while Bulletin dropped back. St. Aidan was in front well inside the distance, but Glenfinnan came with a great run in the middle of the course, and, in an exciting finish, won by half a head. Awahou was a head away, third, with Kilram a neck further back. Time, Imin 45 l-ssec.

WOOLSTON PLATE. Of 120sovs. Weight 9.0. Six furlongs. 2—Mr J. Furze’s Medallist (H. Donovan) 1 I—Mr1 —Mr Whitney’s Turna (L. 4_Mr W. M’Donald’s Kimona (R Kingl 3 Abo started; 7 Merry Land. 3 Aimwell, 9 Royal Charley, 10 Debonaire, 8 Old Times, 6 Pleasure Bent, 5 Glenore. Won by two lengths. Time, Imin 17 4-ssoc. Third Day—Saturday, August 16. The Grand National meeting was concluded to-day, and the final day marked a continuance of the success identified with the early part of the gathering. On all sides one heard that it was the most successful cross-country fixture ever held at Riccarton. The deep gomg to-day no doubt hampered the top weights, but the weather and the going lasted well under the threatening circumstances which were always in evidence. . The fio'd that mustered for the United Hunt Club’s Steeples gave a good exhibition of jumping. Fritz scored very comfortably after showing the way over the last fence. Captain Jack travelled rather better than on the second day, but had no chance with the winner. The deep going appeared to anchor most of the field after half the journey had been traversed. Royal Arms had the best of an indifferent start in the Heathcote Handicap. Pilgrim’s Way took charge before going a lurking, but was beaten before reaching the distance, where Diavolo took charge. Royal Arms then put in his claim, arid staking off a late challenge by Ceylon beat her by a short head. D avolo was a good third, and Medallist, who landed in the straight with the tail of the field, finished fourth. Prince Eddie was a warm chance for the Styx Hurdles, but although he ran a fair race he was in trouble over half a mile from home. The fie'd rose in fairly close order at the last fence, and a little later Daylight Bill took charge but failed to stall off Pip, who won by a length and a-half. Prince Eddie was just in front of Don Rubyl. The winner ran over a good deal of ground, and this enhanced the merit of his win. Loch Mab:n and Beacon carried the bulk of the money in a very good beting race provided by the Sydenham Hurdles. Watchchain piloted the way over the fence in front of the stand, but gave way to Beacon before turning into the straight. The pace was solid. Marton ran at the tail of the field, but moved up as they travelled along the back. At this stage Flington and Ngiatiruanui were cut of it. Loch Mabin screwed badly on landing first over the final hurdle, and Beacon under hard pressure came on again, whilst Marton was gradually coming up. A fine finish saw Marton finishing faster than Beacon, but the latter -lasted long enough to score by a good head. Marton ran a grand race under his weight, and could have been a winner in another few strides. Windage did well after racing over the big fences earlier in the meeting. Dorando, Ncdra, and Glenmore were the popular picks in the Lincoln Steeplechase. Early in the race Ncdra was jumping badly, and Kia Ora came down at the second fence.. When the field settled down Dorando and Gold Pin drew well away, and turning into the straight were over a dozen lengths in front of Glenmore. The last named saved a lot of ground in coming round the turn, and at the stand double was about four lengths from the leaders. Glenmore joined Gold Pin and Dorando as they ran to Cutts’s fence, at which the trio rose together. Dorando and Gold Pin then went on from Glenmore, and had a good lead as they ran round the top bend. Gold Pin drew out a bit from Dorando approaching the last fence, and in the run home won all out by four lengths. Nedra walked very lame with her near hind leg after the race. Gold Pin nearly put off Dorando at the brush fence at the foot of the straight. Dorando jumped the wing, but apart from that the winner gave a fairly good exhibition of fencing, and confirmed the opinion he created at the Dunedin winter meeting, where he ran a first and a second. Borcola also ran a very good race, and his performance contained a lot of merit. Debonaire got away with a slight advantage in the Redcliffs Handicap, but gave way before reaching the straight. Approaching the distance Achillcdes and Gold Cup were in the lead, and in the run homo the latter, who appeared a sure winner down the running, was outridden by the pilot on Achilledcs, who won by a short head. Theodore and Black Lupin got the lyest of a bad start in the Selwyn Handicap, in which Kilts and Silkwcb wore hopelessly left. The two first named led until 80 yards from home, where Theodore dropped out, but Black Lupin lasted long enough to win by the narrowest of margins. A very successful meeting concluded with a favourite in Aha scoring in the Hunters’ Plate from Kingsway.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 16. The totalisator turnover was £45,0694, as against last year, making a total of £133,319 for tho meeting, as against £103,982i last year. Results :
