TOBACCONISTS GRIEVANCES.
(Fsou Cue Own Coreespon'dknt.) WELLINGTON, August 7. Some 40 shopkeepers in Napier are petitioning tho House regarding the Shops and Offices Bill now before Parliament. * They state that they desire to bring clubs, billiard rooms, and hotels more effectively under the provisions of the Act. Clubs, it is complained, arc allowed to sell various classes of goods until 10 p.m., and are not compelled to close on the half holiday. It is stated that the tobacconists in Napier wore amongst the first to adopt a closing hour, and that as a consequence they are not now doing more than a quarter of the tobacconists’ trade in the town. It is asserted that one well-known club is selling more cigarettes than any two tobacconists in Napier. The stocking of side lines by storekeepers apart from thenprincipal lino of business and the trading ;n them beyond tho hours fixed for their sale in other shops is described by the petitioners as derogatory to legitimate trading, find as a matter that calls for better regulation.
